Skunk Train: Wolf Tree Turn from Willits

Overview
This 2 hour round trip will take you from the Willits valley floor to the highest point on our rail line. During this trip you will pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon – an amazing ecological wonderland, and an excellent opportunity to discover the mighty giants that made Mendocino County famous.

The train will stop briefly at Crowley while you enjoy the splendor of one of the oldest and most iconic trees along our route. The Wolf Tree was so named for the large growth off of one side – woodsman called these wolf trees because they choke out smaller trees and underbrush. Passengers are able to get off the train during our stop at Crowley, to better enjoy the views.

You'll make the trip to Crowley on board one of our historic Diesel-Electric engines.

We enjoyed every part of our trip. It was very relaxing for us. Staff was very friendly. We really enjoyed the stop in the meadow. It was such a lovely day.

I love train rides and this one really delivers! The history of the train is great and it is nicely restored. This is an "out and back" ride with a stop half way. We took the early train and stayed at the half way point, hiked around a bit, and enjoyed a picnic lunch that we packed ahead of time and brought with us, then took the later train back to the station. My wife also enjoyed the train as well as shopping at the Skunk Store!

We had a great ride, from the Willits depot to the redwood forest. The ride is relatively short, but winds through the forest and through one tunnel, to a crest where we take a break for about a half hour. At the break time, we could have brought a lunch, and eaten it at one of the picnic tables, or take trails through the forest. There are classic passenger cars with padded seats (socially distanced) and a canteen for drinks and snacks while on the move. We could also walk out to an open car, and get a better look at the scenery going by.
