Skunk Train: Wolf Tree Turn from Willits

Overview
This 2 hour round trip will take you from the Willits valley floor to the highest point on our rail line. During this trip you will pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon – an amazing ecological wonderland, and an excellent opportunity to discover the mighty giants that made Mendocino County famous.

The train will stop briefly at Crowley while you enjoy the splendor of one of the oldest and most iconic trees along our route. The Wolf Tree was so named for the large growth off of one side – woodsman called these wolf trees because they choke out smaller trees and underbrush. Passengers are able to get off the train during our stop at Crowley, to better enjoy the views.

You'll make the trip to Crowley on board one of our historic Diesel-Electric engines.

Amazing! Took our kids (almost 3 and 8 months), the toddler had so much fun looking out the window. The conductor was very friendly and knowledgeable, pointed out historical points of interest along the way. Highly recommend if you are visiting the area or are within a reasonable drive from either location they have. We did the Easter train and there was a little Easter egg hunt, Easter bunny and treats for the kids (plus they sell plenty of adult beverages!) Really can’t recommend the skunk train enough. We will definitely be back!

I am scoring this as average due to the cost. I think that they are trying to make up financial losses from 2020 by gouging the fees for the railbike experience. For what the trip entails it seems like an exorbitant amount of money. Yes I realize that I paid the fee so why complain.... but it was really a fun experience and I think it is unfortunate that it is priced so high so that it limits who would participate. The guide was great ‘Johnny’ and even provided a recommendation for a vegan restaurant (which was superb- Ravens). However, back to my point of the cost- really Skunk train?? Why so costly?

I had never been to northern California before and riding the Skunk Train showed me some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever beheld. The engineer, conductor and all personnel were friendly, helpful and very willing to explain the inner workings of the train to our curious minds. I highly recommend this trip. It's a treat for all ages.
