I'm usually a skeptic when it comes to tours of any kind (annoying, underwhelming, too crowded, too commercial), but my delight with Sustainable Vine's small-group tour was real. Scott Bull picked us up at our hotel in a fully outfitted van, complete with water for hydration and sparkling rose to get the party started. He was extremely knowledgeable about the region and climate, small-batch organic vs. commercially produced wine, and the winemakers themselves, giving the four couples on the tour an insider's view into a remarkable industry. Each winemaker we visited was wholly unique in their approach, welcoming and hospitable, passionate about their craft, and, of course, provided a delicious array of wines for us to taste (and purchase, if we chose to). The tour included a custom-ordered lunch, which we ate outdoors under a beautiful arbor. At our last stop of the day, we rode in open-air vehicles through the vineyards, stopping to taste grapes right off the vine and take pictures of the sweeping views. For a bespoke experience in the company of (just a few) like-minded wine enthusiasts where every detail is taken care of with foresight and professionalism minus any stuffiness or snobbery, I can't recommend this tour enough. Wear comfortable shoes for standing and walking, hats or sunscreen if it's sunny, and come prepared for a full day of anything, since each tour is different from the next.
