St. Petersburg Jungle Prada Site History Tour

Overview
The Jungle Prada Tour is a historian-led guided tour of a pre-historic Tocobaga village site, including the best-preserved American Indian mound in Tampa Bay. The Jungle Prada Site Complex is also thought to be the landing place of the 1528 Narváez expedition, the survivors of which walked from Florida all the way to the Pacific Ocean (1528 – 1536)!

We are located on the shores of beautiful Boca Ciega Bay, directly across from John’s Pass and Treasure Island. The privately-owned Anderson Mound has been lovingly preserved by the Anderson family for over 80 years.

You’ll meet peacocks (residents of the Jungle Prada Site since the 1950s), discover native plants used by the Tocobaga people, and explore a side of St. Petersburg, Florida you never knew existed!

St. Petersburg
The Jungle Prada Site is the best-preserved American Indian site in Tampa Bay. The highlight of our 75-minute guided Florida history tour is a huge Tocobaga Indian midden mound and adjoining village plaza. Hidden away in the historic neighborhood known as Jungle Prada, the main mound consists of tens of thousands of ancient conch and whelk shells, and is more than 900 feet long! The subtropical jungle landscape here is populated by dozens of beautiful free-roaming peacocks! The tour and the locations are loaded with Florida history that is explained in a vibrant and engaging way. In addition to learning about the lives of the Tocobaga Indians, you'll also encounter the amazing story of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish conquistador who landed at the Jungle Prada with the 1528 Narvaez Expedition, and whose incredible journey of survival took him and three others from Florida all the way to the Pacific Ocean (1528 - 1536). If you are a Florida resident or a visitor interested in history and archaeology, the Jungle Prada Site Tour is a rewarding experience that will engage your mind and challenge your perceptions about the Sunshine State!

We rented a house on 22nd street and had seen peacock crossing signs so we decided to walk our dog near the Park at the end of the street. As we arrived a guide came out onto the parking lot and asked if we were there for the tour. We were not but said we would love to join. David was our guide. He is enthusiastic and what was the most amazing fact was that his family owns the land upon which the Sacred Grounds are located. His Grandfather decided in the 1940s that this land needed to be preserved and the history of the people explained. His grandmother had a greenhouse here and David, not only knows the history of this area, but is also an avid, well educated Botanist. This tour is in an idyllic, jungle setting on the Bay of Ciega. All kinds of peafowl wander the site, adding beauty to the history lesson learned. This was truly a magical morning that we spent with David and a small group of tourists. Artifacts, antecdotes, botany, fauna, flora, and respectful appreciation for all life made this such a surprise on our morning walk. It was the best ten dollars we have spent so far! We will bring friends here.

We've been visiting the St. Pete area for over 35 years and were so happy to find this local gem on our latest trip. Florida native David shared his family history, the history of the Jungle area and the history of the ancient peoples who populated the land. Well worth the visit!

This was a fantastic tour full of interesting local history and culture, set in a beautiful botanical setting. David, our tour guide, was interesting, engaging and knowledgeable. I learned so much about the early civilizations as well as native plants of this area. The peacocks were beautiful and added a extra special element. I highly recommend this tour.

Thanks so much for your kind review! We do our tours because there is a lot of fascinating history and natural beauty in our area, and not many other tours of places like our site that showcase it. It's a pleasure to share the Jungle Prada history with interested and interesting people like yourselves.
