The morning I spent surfing with Kapowui was honestly a dream come true.
Short version - I got up on my board in less than 10 attempts and by the end of the lesson was surfing to the beach! Plus we got super lucky and sat out in the water watching dolphins go by!! Thank you Ed, an amazing time!
Long version - Ed, my instructor, was so nice and friendly. He made me laugh a lot during the lesson which was great as I was pretty nervous, I had never surfed before or really be in the ocean that much. Luckily the conditions were pretty mild.
During the first little while on the beach going through the basics, he quickly got a sense for the way I understood things and paid super close attention to everything I was doing and how to resolve it - so for example that I kept putting my back knee in the wrong place and showed me a good way to remember to do it properly. I think it's fair to say that him paying attention and spotting these small bad habits early made my surf lesson much more successful!
My first wave I only got onto my knees, but stayed up, which felt like a great start. About half a dozen attempts later I was on my feet, and by the end of the lesson I'd surfed to the beach a few times and started to learn how to control the board a bit better.
He really went at my own pace which I appreciated, particularly because I'm not the most athletic so took a few minutes to get back out into the water for my next attempt. For anyone not-so-athletic like me, I'd recommend doing this near the end of your trip or before a day sunbathing as I was pretty achey the next day after despite not having any serious wipeouts.
A concern of mine was leaving my stuff on shore, but they have a (classic) surf van parked up all day with someone manning it so there's nothing to worry about, you can bring your phone for a social media snap at the end of the session, some sunscreen, a towel, whatever and leave it in the van.
Thank you so much Ed at Kapowui and team, you made this trip truly special for me as one of the main reasons I was staying in LA was to try surfing - I never imagined I'd actually end up standing on my first lesson!
