What To Expect

Kilauea
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and has been continuously erupting since 1974. Here we will explore the East Rift Zone of Kilauea, including Kilauea Crater, Pu’u O’o Vent and it’s lava flows that are currently entering the Pacific Ocean. The tour will then fly north up the windward side of the island passing Hilo town, the wettest town on earth and the heavenly Hamakua Coast. Then we will whisk you up north to explore the seven windward valleys of Kohala. First stop is the windward side of the Kohala Mountains where we will fly the coastline of Waipio Valley and then move westward to Waimanu Valley. Waimanu can experience annual rainfall of up to 200 inches, fueling 1500+ ft waterfalls, some of the tallest in all of Hawaii.

My husband and I booked a private, 2 hour tour with Mauna Loa. Helen and Eric were terrific. Because there was some cloud cover over by the volcanoes, they suggested that if we waited a little while, we might have better views. During that time, Helen told us all about the islands, her family, stories about various Hawaiian deities and lots about Pele and various eruptions. We could have listened to Helen all day long. Then Eric flew us over to 3 of the volcanoes and over various lava/burn areas. The cloud cover lifted, and the views were spectacular. He also took us out over the sea where we looked for dolphins and whales. He flew us through valleys and up into enormous waterfalls. He showed us evidence of different, older eruptions and we explored different lava areas. He talked about lots of different things--he was a great pilot--smooth and safe and he was also a great guide. We could not have been more pleased. On top of all of that, we were on a cruise ship and only had the one day in port. Mauna Loa Helicopter was flexible when our ship was delayed and made sure we were finished in loads of time, even though our ship left at 3.

Aloha Barabara, Thank you very much for sharing your experience at Mauna Loa Helicopters. I absolutely enjoyed sharing the stories of the island, Hawaiian Mythology and my Ohana. Erik had a blast flying with you and John. You were both such a joy to fly with and share the breathtaking sights of the Big Island. We hope you enjoy your cruise and all that amazing snorkeling you get to do. We hope you will join us again, maybe when we get another eruption. Safe travels and Mahalo for your review! I have taken for helicopter rides with this company and every one of them have been spectacular. I like the smaller copter with the doors off so I can win out and take pictures. Pictures are perfect when you don’t have to shoot through a window that reflects what you’re wearing. FYI never wear white. For those of you that just want a view of the beautiful island and the sea animals from above there always a great pilot.
