What To Expect
1
Kilauea
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and has been continuously erupting since 1974. Here we will explore the East Rift Zone of Kilauea, including Kilauea Crater, Pu’u O’o Vent and it’s lava flows that are currently entering the Pacific Ocean. The tour will then fly north up the windward side of the island passing Hilo town, the wettest town on earth and the heavenly Hamakua Coast. Then we will whisk you up north to explore the seven windward valleys of Kohala. First stop is the windward side of the Kohala Mountains where we will fly the coastline of Waipio Valley and then move westward to Waimanu Valley. Waimanu can experience annual rainfall of up to 200 inches, fueling 1500+ ft waterfalls, some of the tallest in all of Hawaii.

Our flight with Eric totally exceeded all of our expectations!! One member of our small group (3 of us) was celebrating a birthday the day of our flight, and Helen and Eric at MLH really helped make it an incredible experience -- they even presented her with a lei at the end of our trip! Of all the activities we did on the Big Island, this was certainly one of the highlights, and something we would definitely recommend to others. Eric pointed out lots of interesting things along the way, explaining everything from different hiking routes and beaches, to types of lava flow, to some of the activities that take place at the Mars training facility (yes, there's a place on the Big Island where people train to go to Mars!), and so many more. The flight was very smooth and we did get to see lava as we flew over Volcanoes National Park! Unforgettable. It's hard to say whether that or the waterfalls off the northern coast were more jaw-dropping. This was really a very impressive and memorable experience. We cannot recommend Helen, Eric, and the rest of the team at MLH highly enough!

Mahalo, Leslie, for your kind words, it especially meant a lot to Erik and I. It was our pleasure making this tour a little extra special for the Birthday Girl. Mauna Loa Helicopters loves surprising our guests with a Lei when they are celebrating a special event (birthday, anniversary, etc). It was a fun and breathtaking tour over the Volcano National Park, especially seeing lava, and the beauty of the waterfalls and valleys of the Kohala area of the island. We hope all of you have a wonderful New Year and maybe we shall see you again in the future. Mahalo Nui Loa, Helen and the Mauna Loa Crew

We rode with doors on as it is early January 2018. The views of the lava flows gave us a great understanding of the difference between the two types of lava on Hawaii. The view of Kilauea was outstanding as from 9000 feet you could see how BIG the caldera is. We also had viewed it from the national park overlook, but could not appreciate the size. We also were able to see areas of the park we had hiked in previous days. The next view was of the Pu u O o vent east of Kilauea. What a view of lava boiling, but we next view was of FRESH lava exiting a tube an flowing toward the ocean with the ripples we had seen in older lava. We hiked 11 miles to see lava flowing from the ground, but this was really special to see much faster and more surface flow. The waterfall views from the canyons on the northeast coast are accessible only by helicopter and well worth the flight. We did not see any whales on this trip, but we watched while flying along the coast. Our pilot, Peter, was well versed in Hawaiian history and culture.

Mahalo Nui Loa Glenn for your kind words! We are so happy to hear that your family enjoyed their tour and had some amazing sights. We were thrilled to hear that Donna spotted new surface lava breaking through during your flight and the photos you sent us were fantastic. What a memory to cherish! Pete thanks you, as well, for your kind words. We hope you are settling back in at home and we wish all of you a very Happy New Year!

Great experience! Natalie and Helen were wonderful to work with, so accommodating and helpful. Helen was so sweet, she even gave us a ton of recommendations on where to eat around the island. Our pilot Eric was amazing. We felt very comfortable with him. He was very knowledgeable but didn’t talk our ear off!! He let us enjoy the experience (but of course he answered any questions we had!). I could not have asked for better. I would definitely recommend this tour!
