What To Expect

Kilauea

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and has been continuously erupting since 1974. Here we will explore the East Rift Zone of Kilauea, including Kilauea Crater, Pu’u O’o Vent and it’s lava flows that are currently entering the Pacific Ocean. The tour will then fly north up the windward side of the island passing Hilo town, the wettest town on earth and the heavenly Hamakua Coast. Then we will whisk you up north to explore the seven windward valleys of Kohala. First stop is the windward side of the Kohala Mountains where we will fly the coastline of Waipio Valley and then move westward to Waimanu Valley. Waimanu can experience annual rainfall of up to 200 inches, fueling 1500+ ft waterfalls, some of the tallest in all of Hawaii.

We arranged an hour and fifteen minute tour of the waterfalls on the Big Island with our family. Having two daughters under the age of 10, I highly recommend it. The timing of the tour was perfect, and Sean our pilot was very knowledgeable and made both my daughters and myself at ease. Having two of the doors off made this experience unforgettable (and a little nerve racking). Thank you Mauna Loa Helicopters for such a wonderful and quaint experience for our family and providing my daughters with the comfort they needed. We chose Mauna Loa Helicopter tours on the basis of previous reviews and were really pleased that we did. We particularly liked the fact that this company offer private tours where it would just be the four of us and where we would all get a good view (one up front with the pilot and three in the back). The option to fly doors-off was also appealing as we wanted to take photographs. The booking process was easy – we did it by phone when we arrived on Big Island. The waiting area before the flight was very comfortable and our pilot was great in talking through the safety aspects and what we would see on the tour. Doors off was pretty windy for those in the back but a real experience and we got fantastic photos of the waterfalls and valleys. Our pilot was very knowledgeable about the island, very entertaining and very professional. I would highly recommend Mauna Loa for anyone wishing to book a helicopter tour on Big Island.
