What To Expect
1
Punalu'u Black Sand beach
Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands on the island of Hawaii. Located on the southeastern Ka'u coast, Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii. Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Ka'u, Punaluu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large Honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach.
2
Heavenly Hawaiian Kona Coffee Farm
Visit an award winning 100% Kona Coffee Farm, with exclusive access, tasting and tour.
3
Hilo
Drive through Historic town of Hilo.
4
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaiā€˜i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cultural landscapes in the world. The park encompasses the summits of the world's most active volcano, KÄ«lauea. The only comprehensive Park Tour available. Tour the Park and the entire Chain of Craters Road from Summit to Sea.
5
Rainbow Falls
On sunny days, rainbows appear in the mist of the 80-foot falls, making for some pretty magical views. The broad waterfall ā€” nearly 100 feet in diameter ā€” plunges over a natural lava cave and into the river below. When it rains, (which it often does in Hilo), the engorged Wailuku River makes the falls wider, muddier and louder. On these days, you wonā€™t see the rainbows for which this spot is named, but the sheer volume of water and the accessibility of this spot for all ages make it a fun, quick and easy excursion.

Saddle Road
Saddle Road, Hawaii, is considered among the most spectacular roads in the world. This is 55-mile drive of a chance of a lifetime experience. Hawaiiā€™s Route 200 goes through all four of her climates ā€“ tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, youā€™ll see a few places with lava flows and young vegetation and trees. Near the road you can see where lava thickened and left the telltale mounds of a slowing flow. Just after mile 23, youā€™ll come close to a popular local landmark, Pu`u Huluhulu, which is an older Mauna Kea cinder cone, or kÄ«puka, and itā€™s surrounded by younger lava flows. At this point, youā€™re near the peak height for Saddle Road, about 1.25 miles in elevation ā€“ 6,632 feet. From here, youā€™ll continue through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity as you head toward Belt Road, where youā€™ll eventually descend into Kona or Waikoloa.

Our tour guide David was terrific. Engaging personality and very knowledgeable. This a great, and long, tour. Only suggestion I have would be to communicate more about each stop and what to expect in advance (time alloted for stop, things to pay attention to, items you might want with you, etc.) Coffee farm visit a bit of a letdown and exceptionally expensive coffee.

So, I don't really know how to rate our experience. For what it was, it was very good, but it didn't live up to the expectations set by the company's website. The company's "hook" is that it's "The Only Volcano Tours Guided by Geologists in Hawaii," and " If you want to not only see the island but learn about the geology and history of Hawaii why not go with a Geologist? Experience a chance of a lifetime!" So, we expected the tour to be more than just the standard "Here's the volcano, here's the black lava sand beach, etc." Unfortunately, this turned out to be a fairly typical "Get in a van and see stuff" tour. Of the approximately 11 hours we spent on the tour, only about 3 were spent in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and about half of that time was spent driving from place to place. Again, that's fairly typical of a "circle the island tour," but not what we expected. On the other hand, for what it was, it was a great tour. Our guide, David, was informative and fun (but he's not a geologist by training) and we very much enjoyed the time we spent with him. We just don't feel that the tour lived up to its advance billing.

Since the inception of this company, we are a small company of two people, who are both Geologists, and the only two guides. We recently hired David, who is not a Geologist, but has been guiding here for longer than either of us and has an immense and broad knowledge of this island. He has expanded his knowledge of Geology of the island by spending countless hours learning from us, just as we have expanded our knowledge from his years of touring here. Nonetheless, we understand that our website, with the addition of David not being a Geologist, has now partially changed the dynamic of our company description. We are working now to change our website to clearly represent that we are a strongly geologically focused company. We strive and succeed at spending more time in the Park than anyone else. We are not the typical volcano national park tour. 3 hours is more than normal. We spend as much or more time in the park than any other daily tour. Island tours spend about half of that. This is the ā€œBig Islandā€ and itā€™s a 2+ hour commute each way to Volcanoes National Park from Kona. We love to showcase the island along the way with private coffee tasting and the famous Punaluā€™u black sand beach. On the road home, you cannot drive through the historic town of Hilo and not sightsee and see Rainbow Falls. In addition, unlike all other island tours, we provide a sit-down restaurant lunch and not a picnic, rain or shine. In the Park, we visit locations that no other tours add including walking out to the Eruption Site. Once again, we are not the typical volcano national park tour and proud of it.
