War Memorials Walking Private Half-Day Guided Tour

Overview

Some of the most iconic monuments erected in the U.S. capital are not just visibly striking but serve as a reminder of those who sacrificed their lives for the country and, subsequently, contain the history of the nation and a valuable education for all who visit.

Our walk within the National Mall will include a stop at the Greek-temple inspired Lincoln Memorial, where we’ll hear about this structure’s fascinating history, the meaning behind its many inscriptions, and its cultural significance as a sacred space.

Other landmarks commemorating those who served include the Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, and World War II memorials. We’ll learn the surprising and touching stories behind not only the names and bas-relief sculptures, but also the aesthetic design choices of the memorials themselves.

We’ll end our stroll in a natural setting within the Mall, a beautiful place to relax, reflect, and take in the beauty and significance that this space was meant to evoke.

What To Expect

Lincoln Memorial

You’ll pass by this iconic landmark dedicated to the 16 president of the United States and an impressive example of Greek Revival architecture on the National Mall

Korean War Veterans Memorial

This memorial is a touching tribute to those who served in the Korean War and comprises a mural wall, statues representing a platoon on patrol, the Pool of Remembrance, and a memorial wall listing the names of the Americans and U.S. Army Korean augmentation forces who died in the conflict.

National World War II Memorial

This mostly stone structure consisting of 56 pillars was installed to honor the Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II and is a site of historical significance as well as controversy.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

This two-acre site has two black walls engraved with the names of those in the U.S. armed forces who served in the Vietnam War. The site, located within the Constitution Gardens, also features bronze statues of soldiers as well as a memorial dedicated to the women of the who served in the war.

Constitution Gardens

You’ll pass through this landscaped parkland of the National Mall and which includes both a memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
