Washington Heights - Sugar Hill North Harlem Walking Tour

Overview
The storied Washington Heights/Sugar Hill plateau overlooking upper Harlem developed around the historic 18th and 19th-century country estates. Notable figures such as Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, and Madame Eliza Jumel, socialite and second wife of former vice-president, Aaron Burr, and John James Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist, lived in the area and made their mark on American history.

Today, the area's topography still bears evidence of centuries past with rolling hills, wooded parks, and waterfront views, but amidst grand historic apartment houses and cultural institutions, a vibrant American-Dominican culture and street life now defines Washington Heights.

We had a fabulous morning tour of Harlem by the lovely Doris Lee - who was as entertaining as she was informative. Being taken round by someone local, who clearly cares about the area gave us a real feel for the Harlem of old and today. If we could have adopted Doris, we would have. She was very generous with her time even after the tour was over. She took us by bus to the Apollo theatre which was steeped in musical history -and left us at Sylvia's where we had some amazing soul food. Highly recommend this tour

I went to this tour as it was offered within the new york pass. I really enjoyed the tour, there were only 3 people plus the guide, who very nice and calm and informative. He showed us many nice streets, the uni, hamilton house. He also showed us his favourite club, cafes etc. The pace was really slow which I actually enjoyed and took plenty photos. The neighbourhood is lovely.
