We are not seasoned riders and we had a blast. The guides were very helpful, making the experience even better. My son and I had no problems with our horses. Both were even tempered and responsive. When it was time to let our horses run, it was a thrill! During our vacation, we did scuba and snuba and really enjoyed both underwater experiences ... my son said this activity was his favorite! We had about 15 riders in our group and it was a good number. The scenery from 2500 feet up and from close to the ocean was beautiful.

If you don't mind being on Hawaiian time this adventure is perfect for you. We arrived early to meeting location and waited for our ride to the stables. Rides were late and had limited sitting. So we hade to wait more for the compact car and truck to return. Once at the location where the horses are, you'd think that the horses would be ready and off we go. Well, not the case. We had to wait more. The ride was supposed to start at 8:30. We actually didn't get off until 9:45 . The guides were excellent. Very friendly and accommodating. The ride took about 2.5 hours. There was NO riding on the beach.

I cannot say enough good things about trail riding with Maui Mountain Activities. The trail bosses were kind and knowledgeable, the horses were very good and well cared for, the tack was nice (not something you see everywhere,) and the scenery - well, what can I say, we rode through paradise! Maui Mountain Adventures asks guest to self-identify their level of riding expertise: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Everyone rides together, but they ask so that they can put you on the horse appropriate for you. This is because, unlike on other trail rides, they let the horses RUN! TWICE! And by run, I mean full-on gallop. Not a nice little canter. For anyone who wants to run, you can run. If you don't want to, you don't have to, but these horses know what they are doing and you won't fall, even if you're a beginner. I'm an experienced rider and I didn't feel like I was on the typical nose-to-tail trail ride. The whole experience was glorious. The bosses stop the ride twice for pictures, which they take for you using your camera/phone. Oh - and they offer helmets if you want one (must sign waiver if you don't), saddlebags and water and snacks for the two-hour trip.
