George (the shy driver) is an excellent tour guide, even though he's not actually the tour guide. He provides excellent historical perspectives and gives the facts, without the melodrama. The plantation is beautiful but haunting and delivers excellent historical perspectives and timelines. Take your time listening to the audio piece and walking through the grounds - the 2 hours allotted is plenty of time.

I am so glad I went to the Whitney Plantation to learn more about the lives of the enslaved. Not only is a visit to the plantation a small form of respect to acknowledge the pain and suffering of so many people, but it helps bring the time period and lifestyles into clearer focus too. Learning about the history of slaves added a depth to the history of New Orleans that otherwise would be a superficial tour of pretty buildings. The Whitney Plantation tour, and its focus on the lives of slaves, will add appreciation to the different cultures and customs that built the city and surrounding areas. Acknowledging that dark period of history will simply help you see the area more clearly. I wish the Whitney Plantation had been my first stop on my visit to New Orleans. It would have helped me appreciate the food, music, history, and religions of the area more clearly.

My husband and I opted to tour Whitney Plantation due to them focusing on the narrative of the enslaved rather than owners. Our guide was clearly very passionate about understanding the enslaved experience and journey. Some commentary was given around the processes at the plantation, but primarily about the overall history. After the tour we took the opportunity to have a wander round independently and further process all we had heard. There were guides at various points on the ground we also spoke too. We'd highly recommend a visit.
