Jerome State Historic Park is a state park of Arizona, US, featuring the Douglas Mansion, built in 1916 by a family of influential mining entrepreneurs in Jerome, Arizona, a mining region in the northeast of the Black Hills, east Yavapai County. A museum is located in the old Douglas Mansion.

United Verde Copper Company - Historic Marker
The mine was established in 1882. Owned by Territorial Governor Frederick Tritle, financing was obtained to begin large scale mining from New York investors such as Eugene Jerome for whom the town was named after. The massive ore found here was mined for over 70 years producing over a billion dollars in copper, gold, silver, zinc and iron. This was the worlds largest copper producer during World War 1.

Sliding Jail
During the 1930's much of Jerome was in a landslide due to fault lines, massive explosions from the United Verde Copper Company and water erosion. During this time parts of Jerome slid 1 1/2 feet every month. The sliding jail slid approximately 225 ft from its original foundation.

You could walk around Jerome and read all the historic signs and visit the museum but you won’t get a better or more thorough history of the town. Our guide Courtney was passionate, extremely knowledgeable and fun. She gave us everything we hoped for and then some. Well worth your time and money.

My niece was really interested in the mine shaft and mine tailings. Who knew? We thoroughly enjoyed but would have liked more ties to Wild West history.

Take a day trip to Jerome - dubbed the “Wickedest city in the United States. My wife and I opted for a personable historic tour of the town of Jerome. Aaron, owner and tour guide give us a detailed, colorful history of the Jerome which was the Copper Mining center back in the late 1800s to 1935. Part walking and driving tour. Aaron goes to task in presenting the early big innings, it’s heyday, decline and post script. No ghost stories on this tour but lots of history if you are into this sort of thing
