The Collegiate and Colonial tour was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The stops were well thought out with every other stop being a sit-down place where a specific food was brought out just for us with the other stops being at shops that had samples that anybody could go in and try. It would have been nice if there was a little more history interspersed with the food instead of in a big chunk, but logistics would have been a bit more difficult if that were the case. Our tour guide did a great job though it would have been nice if his historical anecdotes were a little more polished. Overall, the food tour was great, if a bit expensive. A great way to learn a bit about a new place.

I have been to Williamsburg several times to visit my friend who lives here. We purchased the Groupon to have the experience of tasting food in Merchant Square. The Groupon was $43 and when you make the reservation online, there is an additional charge of $5 for tax per person and they ask for a tip of $8 per person to cover the food. Those additional costs were a surprise. It would have been nice to have seen that in the Groupon information to help decide whether to purchase the Groupon for what actually amounts to a total charge of $69 for two people. Several people have already commented that some of the places (Candy Shoppe, Peanut Shoppe, Tea Shoppe) offer samples to the visiting public so there were no special treats there. Seasons Restaurant offered a small portion of outstanding ribs with a taste of their baked beans. I could have eaten about five more portions. The Blue Talon provided a decent portion of their fabulous Mac 'N Cheese. The yogurt shop gave each of us a small yogurt with three toppings. This comprised the Merchant Square Tour. I'm not sure that it was worth the price of the Groupon and I'm positive that it was not worth the original price of $43 per person plus tax and tip. The owner gave our group a wonderful Christmas present and told our tour guide, John, to give us the William and Mary Tour as well. John, our tour guide, was amazing. He was friendly, knowledgeable and had a wonderful sense of humor. He gave us a great tour of William and Mary with a lot of history and side comments. I loved seeing the college and the grounds. We were extremely lucky and saw a wedding party leaving the chapel. To end this segment of the tour, we were taken to College Deli where we had a sub called the Holly. It was a popular favorite and a bit hit with our group. The day couldn't have been more perfect for our tour and our group of 10 was a terrific blend of family, couples and friends. The add-on of the College Campus and the College Deli really made this tour a wonderful experience.

My husband and I had a groupon and looked forward to the DOG street tour. Unfortunately, we were told that because it was a crazy busy weekend, we would not be able to have the mac and cheese at Blue Talon. Bummer. Then we went to the first restaurant, Seasons, and were turned away due to gas leak. Our poor tour guide was very upset and full of apologies. My husband and I decided to stop the tour and asked for a refund, which the owner, Lance, did without hesitation, due to the unusual circumstance. I am planning to try the tour again this Saturday with a friend who is visiting from NJ. I'm crossing my fingers that the tour will be a wonderful experience.

I don't know why this person even wrote a review without going on the tour first, or why TipAdvisor allows this to be posted. I can't fathom what would motivate a person to write a review without first going on it. That afternoon, Seasons had a gas leak. The Blue Talon had a sewage leak. On the same day. Perhaps a business establishment should not be rated "Poor" due to acts of God at other restaurants, nor when one has not taken the tour. We work with 8 to 10 different establishments on a single day. This is the first time this has happened, and we took great care of you. Give us a break here. We promptly discounted the customer and upgraded them to the Colonial and College Adventure for free. But some people are never satisfied. Things happen that are outside of our control, and we handled it very well. If we did not handle it well, then we would deserve this rating. But we took very good care of this customer, something that does not deserve 2/5 stars. That said, I do not believe that this rating is given in good judgment or in good taste. It's place here should be reconsidered.
