What To Expect
1
Schooner Appledore II Windjammer Cruise
If you always wanted to sail your own wooden ship, this is your chance. The crew welcomes your participation - offer to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. The Appledore II is a hard working, seaworthy schooner. She has sailed around the world, docking at many harbors along the way. Twice a year, she still sails the Eastern seaboard between her two home ports of Camden, Maine and Key West, Florida. Ask your crew about her history, some have made this bi-annual 2,000 mile sailing trip. Our day sail on the Appledore II schooner departs from Bayview Landing, taking you out of Camden Harbor. Camden is often called the “jewel of the Maine coast” which becomes clear as you sail past the impressive lighthouse, Curtis Island Light, dating from 1836 and into Penobscot Bay. Considered to be one of the top cruising bays in the world, Penobscot Bay will amaze you with its uninhabited islands, wildlife and views of Camden Hills and other coastal mountains dropping off into the sea. During your Camden boat tour, look along the shore for Mount Battie, historic inns, and elegant summer mansions of the rich and famous with their million dollar yachts. Watch lobstermen hauling in their traps. On a typical day, you may see porpoises playing in the water, ospreys and eagles hunting for fish and even the occasional whale. Watch for seals sunning themselves on rocks and cute guillernots, cousins to puffins, with their bright red feet, wobbling as they walk along the rocky shoreline. Quench your thirst with cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks, all available for purchase during your sailing cruise. As Camden Harbor comes back into view, relax and feel the wind sweep through your hair as your memorable sailing ship cruise draws to a close.

My sister and I had a great time with Captain John and his crew on the Appledore. Time out and back was just right and the drinks were great. Also got to meet the builder of this magnificent schooner.

My husband and I had the best time with our daughter and son-in-law sailing on the Appledore! What an amazing way to spend an afternoon. Captain John and crew Sydney and Jack were engaging and entertaining. We laughed, enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine, drinks and each other's company. John shared the history of both the boat and the Camden community. We would do this again in a heartbeat! We did the 3:00 to 5:00 sail - highly recommend.

I agree 100% with the very positive reviews of the trip itself-the crew is great and very professional. That portion would get a 5 star rating. I was extremely disappointed with the "corporate" side. I have been on this boat many times in the past. This year, after you have paid (either online, on the phone or in person) as you are receiving your boarding pass, you are asked to sign a "sign in" sheet. Flip the page over and hidden from view is and indemnity agreement where you agree to pay judgments against the corporate owners and insurers as well as their legal fees AND agree that the only court that can hear any dispute is in Key West Florida. That is downright deceptive- if you want to have an over broad release and indemnity agreement, let people know that is a pre condition of going on your boat before you take their money and have it conspicuous-not hidden on the back of a sign in sheet. There are other great cruises in the harbor- ask those cruise operators if they force you to sign an indemnity agreement (for a boat trip where you have no control over the boat) before deciding which cruise to take.

So if you have been on board with us anytime over the past 4 years with us in Camden and 12 years in Key West then you signed this exact same release. If in fact most every commercial vessel everywhere has a similar release as it is a requirement of most insurance underwriters. In a nutshell there is no magic waiver that releases any company from negligence or fault. What it does do is that the participant must warrant that he or she has no health issues that would prohibit their participation. Also in most cases it would release us from the guests own negligence that he or she may cause. Our 30 plus years of family owned and operated great customer service as well as excellent safety record if far more important than this guest’s misperception.
