Yorktown National Cemetery

You might be surprised to find that this isn’t actually a Revolutionary War cemetery. Instead, this is a Civil War burial ground!

Yorktown Victory Monument

We end our journey at a fitting place, the Yorktown Victory Monument. This monument was conceived soon after Cornwallis’s surrender.

There was a great deal of “dead space” while driving. It would have been nice to use that driving time to tell more history. The advertised time of the tour is 1-2 hours which accounts for driving time, and the information provided is about 20 minutes. Use that time to tell more history or provide options to listen to learn more. The positives are the concept of the tour is fantastic and allows for great flexibility. The directions were very good and easy to follow.

I highly recommend this self guided driving tour!!!! My husband and I were still wanting to experience the history that Yorktown is when our plans changed due to the pouring rain! This was PERFECT!! The emailed instructions weee simple to follow and get it all setup for when we arrived! I would suggest you NOT starting at the visitor center that it says on the email because it’s closed mostly. I would suggest starting where the map shows on the app instead at the monument! We also did the alternate 2 & 3 at the beach and I must say that was spectacular! Gorgeous views with added interesting facts that you won’t find in a history book! This tour was the highlight of our trip so far and the petite cafe on the street at the coffee shop in the 1790 historic home was the icing on the cake!!! It’s a MUST!!! We have told so many about the tour already!
