My wife and I had an incredible experience touring Monument Valley with our guide Joseph. We took a morning tour at around 8:00A.M. (when the weather was a bit cooler and the sun was just coming up) and saw some surreal parts of Monument Valley that are not open to the public. Joseph did a great job of telling us about the history of the area, was incredible knowledgeable about the area, took his time to let us wander through parts of the park to look at the rock formations, and was patient enough to take plenty of pictures of my wife and me during our tour. While you can visit part of Monument Valley without a tour, I highly recommend booking a tour with Dineh Bekeyah to see parts of the park that are not open to everyone and learn some history about Monument Valley.

We took the 2 1/2 hour tour with Duffy who met us in the lobby of the View hotel. We had been confused about the start time. We were coming from Page Az and this was in Arizona so you would think no problem. However we learned from a TA forum that the Navaho reservation is on Mountain daylight time which is one hour later than Az time. We followed that timing and were fine. We shared the tour with one other group of 3. The open sided vehicle was roomy and held up well to the rough roads. We saw all the sights you would see on a self drive tour and also learned about the Navaho culture. We took a private road and saw a specially built Navaho structure. Inside we were shown many everyday items of Navaho life and explained their use and cultural significance. We also heard several tunes sung and played on two types of native Americans flute. This was a very worthwhile tour. Highly recommended

We booked this tour the day before our arrival at Monument Valley. They were really flexible regarding our start time. They make it easy with pick up and drop off at the The View Hotel/Visitor Center parking. You can leave your car in the lot during the tour. We ended up in a group of just 4 people. Joseph was great and volunteered to take pictures of us. He provided a lot of background information and sang to us at the end of the tour. The 2.5 hour tour took us to places that are not open to the general public on the 17 mile loop. Joseph pointed out a number of interesting rock formations (see pics) that we would not have recognized on our own. If you visit Monument Valley, take a tour, you will see more and leave the stress of driving to your guide.
