They are also known together as, The Mittens. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two gigantic mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. If you capture the Merrick Butte at an angle you see that it's between the West & East Mitten Buttes. All three buttes are commonly seen together in many popular films and images. Its elevation is over 6,200 ft making it one of the tallest buttes in Monument Valley.

My family loved this horseback ride! My kiddos (ages 12 and 8) loved their horses, Willie and Tinhorn and our guide, Deion. We have only done a couple other trail rides so we were a little nervous but all of our horses were calm and gentle. My husband and I rode Gossip and Sideburns. They walked with an occasional trot if we nudged them along (no canter or gallup). Deion was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and shared fascinating and moving history. We were honored to learn from him and share in this beautiful place.

It was peaceful and majestic to ride quietly among the massive buttes in monument valley park. The ride was excellent and long enough to nearly get used to riding a horse after nearly 40 years passed since my childhood horse riding lessons. Everyone in our group was adventuresome so the guide took us up on a high ridge to overlook the valley, something that not everyone signs up for. It was a great view and not too scary. 2 hours was just about right. While the tour was excellent, the owner showed up about 20 minutes late and then had to prep the horses which made the ride start about 45 minutes later than scheduled. We had the time, so that wasn't an issue for us, plus I grew up in AZ so I am aware that sometimes Navajo time is more relaxed.

I was excited about my first time of horse riding. And was expecting to make a great memory out of this experience. At first, our guide seemed to be really nice person, yet, once he opened up his mouth, about half of the information was spoken about unfortunate history of Navajo people. It sounded like because of invasion of Caucasian, they have miserable life today. Maybe it is true, and I respect and feel sorry for what has happened. And that last about 15 min. We spent about 45 hearing not so interesting info in total. Wished at least the information was much more fascinating. It would be okay to share some of the unfortunate history since that is true, but sharing too much of his pessimistic view about the history, but to much of it would not lift up tourists to have a great impression and also to have wonderful memory for the day. Nevertheless, riding itself was safe. The guide was making sure safety well. I wished I didn't go for horse riding here, the experience ruined my my day at monument valley. Should have left the place after the scenic drive. And I no longer want to try horse riding any place any more. Going for horse riding is not cheap, the experience didn't worth $220 for two of us and tip. And I also wished they picked up the phone, so I wouldn't have to drove to wrong destination.
