I agree with other commenters the natural history portion needs significant updates. The museum is in a bit rough in certain spots, but I still think it is a good NYC activity. You can learn a lot about the world in a short amount of time and there are some incredible displays with great artifacts. The human historical exhibits were more interesting than the animals. The portion I enjoyed the most was the planetarium. It is modern with various types of media and I think delivers a good level of understanding (not too technical and not too simple). I will say the overall layout of the museum is frustrating and a bit difficult to navigate. Also, it really didn't seem like they limited the number of visitors even though it was timed entry. There were certain areas that were overly full. I can't speak to the ticket purchase through Trip Advisor, but I am surprised individuals wouldn't go direct to the museum website where ticket purchase is easy.

Save yourself a big hassle and disappointment and skip this museum. The ticketing process is completely confusing - first you need to purchase tickets from one website, then go to another website to reserve a time. Once you arrive, you wait in two lines, one outside and then another one inside to have paper tickets printed. What is the point of purchasing online? The museum itself is a disappointment. I have been to much better American history museums in Chicago and Washington, DC. This was a big waste of time and money.

Do not purchase a ticket through TripAdvisor. You must go online to the museums website and register for a specific time that you intend to be at the museum. Then they allow you to stand in line to purchase the ticket at the counter. The lines move pretty fast. It really doesn’t matter if you have pre-purchased a ticket through TripAdvisor or not. The procedure is the same. If you want to go to the planetarium, you have to apply for a reservation weeks in advance, separately from your application to visit the museum. If you’ve been to the museum in the past, I wouldn’t recommend another visit. It hasn’t changed. Go see Heights at an IMAX theater instead.
