Anchorage Aurora Quest - Visite photo des aurores boréales

Aperçu
This is the longest-running northern lights photo tour in the Anchorage area. We pick you up at your Anchorage accommodations and take you on a nocturnal adventure to witness the beauty of the Alaskan night sky. It's a great option for any travelers to Alaska during August to late April. This tour accommodates serious photographers to sightseers.

We conduct a daily update that includes both the aurora borealis and weather forecast. The tour runs based on that forecast, but runs only if the forecast indicates a chance of seeing the aurora. Because both weather and the aurora borealis are natural phenomena, we cannot guarantee seeing the northern lights.

This tour increases your chance of aurora viewing success by allowing you to reserve as many nights as you like [space available] and only finalizing payment 48 hours in advance under the Reserve Now & Pay Later system. If you do not see the northern lights during your tour, you get a free make-up tour.

The pros are that we did get to see the lights and were able to take some pretty amazing pictures. Our guide was also nice and did his job well. The cons are that none of the three locations we were taken felt safe. The first viewing location was on a frozen lake where people ice fish. We weren’t sure if the ice under us was compromised or not. The second location was an old bridge that was no longer in use and it was covered in a trail of ice. It also went over a river and had no railings. The third location was standing in the middle of the road and having to move when cars came down the road. All in all it would have been nice to just worry about the lights and not our safety while trying to get a good picture. If we had it to do over again we would have skipped this tour and taken our rental car out to view the lights ourselves. The value is just not here for what you get.

I am glad that our guide took good care of you and you were able to see the northern lights and get some great photos. I am sorry that you did not feel safe during your tour. I assure you that you were certainly safe, and it is part of our guide's role to ensure that. We know that winter in Alaska can be scary and intimidating. Part of the reason you would hire a guide is because we are familiar with the conditions. I can assure you, our guides are familiar with any hazards at all locations where we go. It only takes four inches of ice to be safe for walking. And if people are ice fishing on a lake, it is certainly safe enough to walk on. In the middle of winter, it is not only safe to walk on frozen lakes, but even drive vehicles and aircraft. Additionally, there was no need or expectation for you to go out on the ice at that location. Viewing the aurora from the shoreline was available. The bridge location was safe. Yes, it is open with no rails, but the guide made you aware of that and stood by to ensure you did not endanger yourself. And yes, the road location you mentioned was safe. That specific location is near the end of a road with a slow speed limit. Generally, we will see one or two cars total traveling that part of that road at night. Unfortunately, the pullout we would usually use has not been plowed so we could not pull off the road. Our guides have procedures they utilize to ensure that all participants are safe. To reiterate, we ensure that our guests have a safe experience and would never expose our guests to unsafe conditions.

We booked a private tour for just my wife and me. They communicated with us extensively with great information on how to prepare for a once-in-a lifetime experience. Starting 3 days out from the scheduled tour, they advised that the weather and aurora viewing conditions would not be ideal, so we agreed to reschedule the tour for several days later. The guide picked us up from a private residence, was on time and we headed out to the first location. He constantly checked the aurora conditions using a phone app and explained the key metrics to look for. I'm a serious amateur photographer, so I normally don't need advice on how to configure or use my camera gear (3 camera bodies, several lenses and supports). However, shooting the aurora is *very* different from what's 'normal' for me, so I gladly accepted the guide's assistance to get set up. It was also extremely cold and dark; both conditions I wasn't used to. We decided to move on from our initial location as the aurora conditions weren't ideal yet. The guide was glad to accommodate my desire to find a location with more interesting scenic elements, so we drove to another spot. By then, the aurora conditions were improving and we got some terrific images (about 3:00a). The conditions continued to improve and we got many great photos at several more scenic spots. By about 5:00a the whole sky was lit up and we could even see the aurora's corona. We continued to shoot until after 6:00a (moon rise was at 5:30a). We had so much success observing and photographing the aurora that we never got around to a campfire or eating; didn't miss either at all! I enthusiastically recommend this tour company and would hire them again if/when we make return to Alaska.

I am so glad that you had such a great experience! Your night was definitely a good example of why patience is a virtue for aurora-chasing. I am happy to hear that the photo tips were very helpful to you and that your guide Chad took such good care in making sure you got everything out of the experience. Being able to create an opportunity like this is why we created the private aurora tour option. Thanks so much for the great and detailed feedback. We hope to see you again!
