Discover a world of marine science and one of the best snorkeling spots in the Hilo region at this family-friendly beach park.

The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools for beautiful snorkeling and excellent surfing.

Lava from Mauna Kea has formed a natural seawall at Richardson Ocean Park, making it a sheltered beach that is perfect snorkeling with giant sea turtles, monk seals and abundant sea life. Rock pools that fill at high tide make for shallow, detached swimming holes at low tide. Snorkel in the pools, without the stress of swell or currents.

So many fish and the turtles were really chill. Our snorkel guide was very helpful, had plenty of snacks and beverages on hand.

Isaiah was amazing, one of the best snorkel guides we've ever had. He was so knowledgeable (he's local!) and helpful throughout the process. We weren't brand new to snorkeling but I know if we had been, he would have helped us through it! Both spots were great, we didn't see turtles but hey- they are wild animals! It's not always a guarantee. We saw PLENTY of other amazing wildlife.

Our tour guide was amazing...so helpful and did such a amazing job. The view was absolutely gorgeous and we seen so many fish, coral and other sea life. The best was the 8 Sea turtles 🐢 my fav! Highly recommended!
