Discover a world of marine science and one of the best snorkeling spots in the Hilo region at this family-friendly beach park.

The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools for beautiful snorkeling and excellent surfing.

Lava from Mauna Kea has formed a natural seawall at Richardson Ocean Park, making it a sheltered beach that is perfect snorkeling with giant sea turtles, monk seals and abundant sea life. Rock pools that fill at high tide make for shallow, detached swimming holes at low tide. Snorkel in the pools, without the stress of swell or currents.

We were supposed to go to Blonde's Reef. However, due to the weather Sara called and asked if we wanted to do a beach Snorkel so we could get in the water. Heather, (guide) took us out on a private beach snorkel tour to multiple beaches. They provided snacks, juice and water during our time. Heather was extremely helpful even running back to the car along with going to the life guard station to get bandages as my husband cut himself. The service went out of their way to communicate, accommodate and provide us with a great time versus simply cancelling or asking us to reschedule.

Captain Kimo, Andrew, and Debi were our fantastic guides on what we thought was going to be just a run of the mill snorkel trip (we have been on a bunch around the globe). Kimo, Andrew, and Debi were all super kind and knowledgeable. The seemed to be just as into the sights as we were! All of us on the boat made for quick friends on what felt like a true adventure. The first drop off was at an ok coral reef - about 20 feet below snorkelers. BUT THEN a green sea turtle swam right up to us and hung around for awhile. Later, we swam with a pod of 100+ spinner dolphins, saw humpback whales, and a hammerhead shark! We found this trip to be the perfect combo of wildlife watching and snorkeling. Would recommend to anyone and everyone willing to have a genuine experience while not expecting to have their butt kissed.

Thanks to our guide Giulia we spent a wonderful morning snorkeling on wonderful beaches and swimming among colorful fish The guide also took us to see turtles in a small lagoon among the rocks Giulia was very nice, kind and professional both while we were swimming and when she told us many anecdotes and gave us advice.
