Discover a world of marine science and one of the best snorkeling spots in the Hilo region at this family-friendly beach park.

The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools for beautiful snorkeling and excellent surfing.

Lava from Mauna Kea has formed a natural seawall at Richardson Ocean Park, making it a sheltered beach that is perfect snorkeling with giant sea turtles, monk seals and abundant sea life. Rock pools that fill at high tide make for shallow, detached swimming holes at low tide. Snorkel in the pools, without the stress of swell or currents.

Though the turtles weren't present, the black sand beach snorkel destination was a great spot for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Hilo Ocean was a great dive shop, and processed us quickly to get to the beach. Snacks were timely on this hot day, and we had a lot of time in the water.

I went with my Mom and we had an amazing time!! David was really nice and went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had fun! I am legally blind so with very little vision he helped me so much and I am definitely going back next visit! Thank you so much for everything!!!! (we saw tons of fish, and 3 turtles!)

We went out for the afternoon snorkel session and we we taken to a lovely beach that was easily accessible. Our guide, Rosie was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with all our equipment we needed. I would highly recommend this for an all ages activity.
