The COVID times and the resulting economic policies have very much impacted the Colonial Williamsburg experience. If you are making your first trip, it will be a great experience and worth the cost of admission especially if you can spend multiple days. If you have been here every year or two for the past few decades you really see the differences. Our group had two of us with many, many, visits; two teens with several visits, one 9 year old on her second visit, a first time six year old, and the mom on her first visit! So we all had different experiences! First advice is to plan ahead versus just going and doing what you happen upon. Visit the Palace and the Capital as early as possible to have less line waiting time. As others have noted, eating lunch can be an issue - we found hitting lunch places between 11:30 - 11:45 helped avoid the longer lines. Sadly due to issues beyond the control of CW, government restrictions limit tours to the first floor and staffing issues limit what is open and when. The members of our party who were first timers had the best time because it was all new! The CW staff who were working were as wonderful as ever! Don't miss taking in at least one of the performances at the Museum. Be sure to catch at the Play House and the visits from President "George Washington - He will not move from the time in history he is representing and has fun answers to questions that mention future events! With a July visit it is wonderful that CW has lots of trees - blessed shade! The staff worked hard to keep you in the shade whenever possible. Come when you can and especially come after all the restrictions are gone and things are fully operational. We are blessed to be within under three hours away.

What better time to visit this special and historic place than the 4th of July? Yes, we decided to come for the Independence Day celebrations, and we were not alone. The town was quite busy and almost all of the exhibits were open. It was also extremely hot, so I salute the staff in their colonial outfits who performed in uncomfortable weather. Of course we bought the entry tickets, because the prices are quite reasonable, and we wanted to go inside the famous buildings like the Palace, the Capitol, the houses and the shops. Also we are supporting the upkeep of this important American treasure. We have visited the site several times in the past, and we did notice that fewer places were functioning, somewhat due to the recovery from the covid virus. Finding a place to eat can be a challenge. We were able to eat dinner in the Kings Arms tavern, do the musket shooting, and tour almost the whole town. The fireworks display was a fun and festive event, although it was a long walk back to the Visitors' Center.
