we rented the Gocar for the dork-factor, as we found out the segway tours were mostly 2 1/2 hours long (too long) and we wanted a good laugh. People do laugh at you and take your picture and it is really funny to drive around town in. We did the quick briefing and were sent out into traffic on a steep hill - scary. The brakes did not work well, which on San Francisco hills, is nerve wracking. I think my hands are just coming unclenched as there always seemed to be a very expensive car at the bottom of the hill. The GPS is not very helpful when you get lost. I could tell we were paying by the hour as it was almost impossible to get back to "home base." Finally, the GPS states emphatically that "I am not allowed on freeways or bridges," however, somehow, we ended up on the freeway and the Golden Gate Bridge. Ack!!!!! We were attempting to veer off to the Palace of Fine Arts and somehow ended up on the freeway which merged on to the bridge. No word of guidance from the GPS lady advising us how to get OFF or out of the situation. I thought we would die - cars were flying by, taking our picture. My sister thought this was the funnies thing she had ever seen and still loves to tell the story, and I am finding it mildly amusing now that I know how the story ends and that we survive, but going full-speed in a lawnmower on wheels with a top end of 30 on a full freeway was not safe. Once we got off (the toll booth operator had to stop traffic so we could get off), I just wanted to get back but again, no guidance and it took almost another hour. I felt unsafe in traffic locally as well. It was an adventure, but stick with the guided tour and pick a day that is not crazy-busy with traffic.
