If you hike one trail in Yellowstone this is it!

My 14 year old son and I went on a hike with Bob in the Lamar Valley on July 10th. Bob provided us with incredible knowledge of both plants and animals. We saw herds of pronghorn and bison. Seeing a pronghorn run from a close distance is a treat. The hike was one of the highlights of our trip.

We did two hikes with Yellowstone Hiking Guides, Lamar Valley with Bob and Lone Star Geyser with Jake. Both were very organised and the communication with the Josh and Emily Jo was absolutely fine. I would definitely recommend doing both those hikes since you get to learn so much about the area and the people and both guides were clearly very experienced hikers - perfect for a pair like us from the city! The hikes were exactly as advertised and the lunches were very nice too. The only downside was on the day of Lone Star, the conditions were perfect for mosquitos and I got well and truly bitten - entirely out of the control of Jake and I wanted to note how well he handled things. We still enjoyed ourselves. Finally, neither hikes were particularly long or strenuous but still gave a very good feel for Yellowstone off the beaten track.

I booked this trip 2 weeks in advance and was told I would receive directions to the trailhead. Two days before the hike, I realized I never received the directions and sent an email. I didn't receive a response so I called the next day and was given some brief directions (after I asked for details) and then emailed a google maps link. On the morning on the hike, the link would not work inside the park, but I was able to cut and paste from what they sent and was directed to the wrong trailhead. An hour and half later, we finally figured out where we were supposed to be, but the guide had left. This experience was awful as we woke four young kids up early to do this and were expecting it to be the highlight of our trip. It resulted in a lot of unnecessary stress and disappointment and when we finally talked to the guide, she was argumentative and not at all apologetic.

We are very sorry that you were unable to find the trailhead. We did send directions, and we have since posted them to our website. At the Lamar River Trailhead, there is a horse trailhead, with the two latrines, and a hiker trailhead, 0.25 miles to the east. We meet at the hiker trailhead. After all of the confusion we did issue a refund. Still we are very sorry this experience did not work out well for your group.
