Went with a friend to see the Grand Canyon for the first time. Since neither of us wanted to drive, we opted for the train tour. In general, I was happy for the entire experience.
Included in our package was one night at the Grand Canyon Hotel, dinner in the Grand Canyon Depot, breakfast at the Grand Canyon Depot, one night at the Maswick Lodge in the Grand Canyon, a bus tour of the south rim on arrival and train travel both ways. Meals and lodging are reviewed separately. Overall, the entire package is well done.
We chose first class tickets for our first leg. The seats were very comfortable with very good leg room. Our steward was very attentive, snacks were plentiful and varied, and we were very comfortable. The steward offered good suggestions of places to eat and see along with general park information. I was really glad we spoiled ourselves.
Our return trip was in standard coach, with adequate bench seating. It was as expected for the price. Water was provided and a cafe car was available. The children seemed to really enjoy the characters on the train, and some of the singers were very talented. We did not buy the commemorative photograph, but the photographer was very personable. Our steward was very charming and worked hard to make it a pleasant experience for all.
In both legs of the trip, we were able to see wild animals that we don't see normally and enjoy beautiful countryside views.
I would have liked an option to return at an earlier time in the day OR VIA shuttle or bus instead of train, to shorten the time of the return trip. We had pretty much done what we had on our list by 11 AM. For those driving into to Phoenix, it can make for a late night.
