Took the day trip with our 2 kids (13 and 10). The train ride there and back was fun; the staff is amazing! We went during March spring break and it was cold (snow on the ground). A few tips -- we did coach class, but there was no real difference between coach and pullman (pullman actually looks cool because it is authentic to the 1800's period). We thought first class came with meals, but we asked the staff who said the food offerings were "heavy snacks" (hummus, whole fruit, etc.). Highly recommend NOT going to any lookout points past Mojave Point. You have limited time; it takes 40 minutes to go to Hermits Rest lookout point (the last lookout)... and 40 minutes back. There is a snack shop at Hermits Rest (pre-made sandwiches, chips, drinks), but again I do NOT recommend going that far. Our family literally had to sprint back to catch the train before it departed. You can leave items on the train (nothing of value). Best option - bring your own snacks and lunch in a small cooler. Leave the lunch cooler on train and eat when you return around 2:30-ish. Food offerings at the Grand Canyon are readily available but spread out (lots of walking). We did have a snack in the train's cafe car. Neat experience, but pricey as expected. We got our daughters root beer floats, which came in a souvenir plastic mug for $10 each.

The Cowboy Show prior to getting on the train was rather "hocky" but still it set the stage for the train ride. The staff on the train were excellent! The ride itself was very scenic and a comfortable ride. It is the perfecuset means of transportation to get to the Grand Canyon. We stayed one night at the rim which was just the right amount of time also. The Grand Canyon was a very easy walk and there was an easy hike into the Canyon for those with limited time. The pizza at the Maswik Lodge was excellent. The only reason I gave it a Very Good instead of excellent was because we had a two hour wait to get into our room. It was over spring break and they were very busy. The cabins were very nice though once we got there. I would definitely recommend taking the Grand Canyon Railway!

My sister and I drove from Sedona to Williams and then took the train to the Grand Canyon. We splurged for the luxury dome and were quite pleased. The seats were comfortable, coffee, bottled water and snacks were a nice treat. The staff was just amazing. Very friendly, polite, and down to earth. As luxury ticket holders we were allowed to go anywhere in the train we wanted to - including the rear outside platform. Great photo opportunity. It was very nice to just sit back and relax for 2+ hours, look at the scenery and chat with other passengers. We combined the train ride with the Freedom Tour (bus ride) around the canyon and were glad we did. We were able to see some sites that we wouldn't have been able to see otherwise. The bus tour is a good choice. All in all it was a great day. One word of caution: if you are driving from Sedona, either stay overnight at the canyon and come back on an early train or stay overnight in Williams. Do not make the drive back to Sedona in the dark. There is a section of the road that's full of hairpin turns and switchbacks. On the GPS it looks like your small intestines. LOL. Not a good drive in the dark.
