We all had a wonderful time on the train. Myself, my friend, my husband and our grandkids. The grandkids loved the entertainment. The train robbery was a hoot. The pre trip Wild West Show was fun. It was too far for us to walk, a lady took us in a shuttle and came back to take us to our train car. The only problem was that my friend and myself have issues with walking long distances. We wanted to take the grandkids to Grand Canyon marketplace to get something to eat and souvenirs. The train employee told us which bus stop would take us there. Park employees then directed us to the next, then the next bus stop. We ended up at the bus stop for Hermits Rest. The bus driver told us that no buses were going to the marketplace, and our only option was to walk back to the train depot. We called transportation, taxi, no one would come get us. We were able to walk back as far as Bright Angel lodge, where the employees there called an ADA van for us. It was a miserable experience. The train employees should have told us that there was nowhere for us to go, and that there were no buses to the marketplace. We would have spent that time getting food for the grandkids at the food truck, had a pleasant time sitting on the porch of the lodge there. Instead we walked and walked to nowhere, causing us both a great deal of pain. My friend spent the next day in bed at the hotel. All of this could have been avoided if the train employee, and the park employees for that matter, had given us correct information. I feel like we missed the Grand Canyon. The actual train experience though was alot of fun.

I want to first be clear that the ride was nice, nothing terrible about it, it just was far less than the expectations they set at booking, online, and other reviews here. All of the reviews set such high expectations for this trip. We were unfortunately poorly disappointed. The staff was very friendly, but we really had no roving musicians or entertainment until the last 10 minutes or so of the 2 hour trip, despite that being the main selling point for us doing this trip instead of driving. The agent that booked us boasted about the grand ponderosa trees we'd see from the dome car. We didn't realize we were in the ponderosa landscape until the announcer told us we were leaving the ponderosa's and entering the Junipers. They were lackluster either way. Nothing too grand about them. (Though there were some entering the park that were cool, though no one on the train pointed them out to us. The complimentary snack bar was a nice treat but really didn't make up for all the disappointment of the long slow journey. Of course, we knew it would be a two hour ride, but our expectations were set for great scenery and entertainment along the way which we did not get. The agent that booked us did advise that the dome car was the only available seating for the trip and we paid the exorbitant uncharge for the four of us to sit up there (over $800 for the round trip). I of course didn't experience the ride from any of the other seats, but I would never recommend anyone pay the additional price for the dome. I feel terrible because everyone really was so nice and seemed to be so happy to do their jobs. I don't know if we got some bad version of what we were supposed to...?

The wife and I absolutely loved this train trip to and from the canyon. We saw coyotes, elk, deer, prairie dogs, and several bird species on the trip. We were in the dome top cars. Our stewardess was Conyarae and she did an outstanding job with both her knowledge of the area and the canyon. Several people that had taken another train up or stayed at the canyon were all overly positive about how great she was compared to their other trip. Only complaint was the 3.5 hours are the canyon was too short to really experience everything, but you can see all the famous photos.
