As part of a package purchased through the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel website. we rode the Grand Canyon Railway from the Williams depot to the South Rim. Although the train ride time-wise longer than driving in, having a car in the village is not an advantage. Everything is either in walking distance or easily accessible by the free shuttle.
The trip takes 2 hours and 15 minutes each way. We specifically chose first class for the extra leg room. We rode the Coconino car and had Cameron as our host. Along with more leg room first class comes with complimentary lite snacks and soft drinks. you can also order alcohol for an additional cost.
Cameron was great in that he was fun and informative without being overbearing and too silly. The ride is scenic, but we weren't able to see much wildlife on the way up except for cattle and a couple of prairie dogs. However, on the way back we saw a huge buck after just leaving the village. Quite impressive, to say the least.
There is lite entertainment on the train. A couple of singers, my favorite being Banjo Billy. Also on the way back you experience a train robbery.
The one negative was the photographer. Took our picture on the way up, but was rushing to get to everyone with her photo package to sell on the way back. As our area on the car only had us and another couple in it she didn't get to us until we were almost back at the depot, then rushed through. Her package was $40 which was a bit extravagant for what you got. When the other couple said no she just took off to get to another car with more people. Probably lost a sale with us if given an opportunity to (GASP!) look at the package.
Overall though, a very enjoyable experience. One we'll always remember.
