What can I say. This has to be one of the best days of my life. I have ticked off one of my top bucket list items by visiting the Grand Canyon West Rim.
We arrived in Vegas late on Friday and had booked the west rim coach trip through grayline tours a few months ago. We were picked up early on Saturday morning at 6:15 and made our way to the transport centre. From there we boarded our coach to the Grand Canyon west rim.
After around an hour we reached Hoover Dam. We spent about 20 mins on the bridge overlooking the dam and got some pictures. It was very impressive.
Around an hour later we stopped at a service station for some snacks and drinks. Along the way our driver was talking to us and there was also a recorded tour guide at various points.
Around an hour and a half later we arrived at the Grand Canyon national park and at the transport area where buses shuttle you to 3 different areas. We decided to head to eagle point first and do the skywalk as we had heard it gets extremely busy. When we reached eagle point, so called because of a formation of rocks resembling an eagle, we stepped off the bus and there it was... The Grand Canyon.
I could feel myself welling up. I’d waited for this moment all my life and there it was. The view cannot be described. My wife felt some anxiety due to people standing close to the edge so she held back slightly, but this gave me 5 or 10 minutes of just personal viewing and reflection. I’m not a spiritual person, but I felt something during this moment and it felt wonderful, after a while of feeling like this, my tourist mind kicked back in and I got my camera out. I offered to take some pictures for a few people and a nice lady returned the favour. I got some incredible pictures and videos.
I then went on the skywalk. $25 didn’t feel too bad and I did enjoy it. It wasn’t scary at all and offered some nice views. I did buy the photo package for $65 which gave me 18 digital prints. I won’t go into too much detail here as whilst it was good it felt a bit tourist trappy to me and on reflection I Probably wouldn’t do it again.
We then headed off to guano point and again there was an incredible view. We decided to eat first, but it wasn’t the best experience. They were short on corn and mash so had to wait around 20 mins to arrive, this quite heavily ate into our time but the food was ok when it did arrive.
We tried to do the short trail to the top of some rocks but my wife’s anxiety meant we had to turn back. The trail really is narrow and I’m surprised more people haven’t write dicey in places but the views offered are stunning.
Back to the transport centre and on the bus due to running out of time, we didn’t get to visit the ranch because of this but I’ll be back one day for it.
Absolutely incredible day, grayline staff were excellent and our driver was superb. He deserved every cent of his tip. Cannot rate this tour enough and will definitely be doing it again one day.
Thank you so much for fulfilling one of my dreams guys.
