It was a well organized tour to see Haleakala Sunrise and bike tour. Though the journey started early in the morning 2am for the pick up at my resort, it was a totally worth the effort. My guide was Merlin, he was tactful and made the effort to explain to bike routes to us. The journey with him up the mountain very informative and Merlin also took care to ensure there were pit stops for toilets break. At the top of the mountain was very cold as you would be standing at observation point for quite some time. Two of the local rangers will also sing Sunrise song if indeed the day starts with a beautiful sunrise.

As others have written, the early hour and the COLD are daunting. BUT oh so worth it. The guides kept the drive interesting to the summit with a brief stop for fresh fruit from a road side stand. I am not sure if it is typical, or we were fortunate, at sunrise a woman performed a Hawaiian Sunrise Chant. The self-guide ride down the mountain was fun. We stopped at the lavender farm and had a hot beverage and donuts. The donuts were the best EVER and from a shop in Wailuku called Dynamite Donut. On our trek down I had a flat tire from a piece of glass. Bike Maui was very responsive and exchanged out my bike so we could proceed with our ride. There was unexpected road work with a detour on our route back to the shop to which BIke Maui responded quickly and did not detract at all from our experience.

I joined this tour on my first trip to Maui. There are still not many Japanese tourists on Maui, so this tour is only in English. The warnings about the bicycle descent in the latter half are given in English, but basically, as long as you pay attention not to brake suddenly and not to stop in the middle of a curve, you'll be fine. However, the guide kept talking the whole time in the car on the way to the top, but I didn't understand very well. (^^;) (That's why I rated it "good") It's a bit of a hassle to meet at 3am, but the starry sky you see at the top before sunrise is very beautiful. It's worth seeing. And, needless to say, the sunrise is very divine. The bike tour (although we were given a map to the shop) only goes down the switchback part of the mountainside with a good view twice (I don't know if it's always like that or if there was construction going on in the city). We meet at the tour bus waiting at the bottom of the hill, go up again by bus, and go down again. There were no clouds on the day we participated, so we could see beautifully from Kahului to Kihei. However, there were clouds on the mountainside during our stay in Maui, so we may have had some luck. Anyway, it was downhill all the way, so we didn't have to pedal. The road was well paved and wide, so it was refreshing. However, if you let your guard down, you can go quite fast. If you brake hard out of fear, you will be thrown off your bike, so you need to be careful. Also, I don't know if this is the case for every tour, but while we were traveling by bus, we stopped at many scenic spots to take photos. Perhaps because of this, it was almost noon by the time we got down the mountain by bus, so we skipped our stroll around the town of Makaao on the way. However, we had planned to drive the Hana Highway in the afternoon, so we have no complaints about this. Overall, I think it was a good tour, although some English skills are required.
