Harlem Sunday Gospel Experience

Aperçu
It is an iconic scene often captured in film and photographs – beautifully dressed women with impressive hats in Harlem heading to church for Sunday worship. But, it’s more than fashion or a show, Harlem congregants consider church worship and church family an integral part of life and a source of weekly spiritual sustenance.  Sunday Gospel in Harlem invites you to be a part of this custom by respectfully joining a local church family for an hour of worship including gospel.

Please note the entire church service is 90 minutes or more in duration. The tour group stays for a hour, departing before the sermon begins. If you wish to stay on your own for the entire service, please notify the tour guide when checking in. If you choose to stay for the entire service you will be on your own and will miss the walking tour.

If this tour is completely booked, please consider the Wednesday Gospel Praise Music option.

I actually attended the Wednesday tour of Harlem and gospel service on Wednesday 10th October. I absolutely loved it, it's not one the traditional touristy things to do but I wanted to see a different part of New York and experience a gospel service. I wasn't sorry at all, we found the meeting point easily enough and was met by a lovely lady who directed us to a small park to wait in line with the others. Our tour started promptly with a group of around 20 of us being taken round by Nidal (sorry not sure if I spelt it right). We had a wide range of countries and ages represented amongst the group but Nidal was very good at communicating across all levels, I thought he did a fantastic job. I liked the tour of Harlem, in fact I wish it could have been longer but the absolute highlight for me was the gospel service. We were made to feel so welcome, with part of the service being dedicated to acknowledging all the countries people were visiting from (they called our your country and you stood whilst they clapped and cheered welcome). I have been to a gospel service in LA before about 10 years ago and the overriding memory of that is one of joy and this was no different. The preaching was a little bit much for me, but to be honest that was more about the volume than the content and I understand the whole point was to reach a crescendo. After the service we were wished farewell with a bottle of water and sandwich made by the congregation. It might not be a 'usual' choice but please do this, it's fantastic.

This was one of the most enjoyable things we did during our stay in NYC. Doris took the time to tell stories about the area, which she is obviously passionate about, during the walking tour after the service. She made wonderful suggestions of places to eat for those who wished to have lunch after the tour. Thank you Doris, it was such a pleasure being part of your tour.

Nothing of what makes us reluctant to go to church, on the contrary. People are happy and laugh, sing and dance. I am not a religious person myself, but singing along with the choir (as they encourage you to do so) gave me a deep feeling of happiness, maybe what God is supposed to be: love.
