Hearthstone Historic House Museum
Appleton, Wisconsin was one of the first three cities in the world to be lit by an Edison central power station, the other two being New York and London. This was all due to Henry J. Rogers, who decided to invest in Edison’s power station in order to light two paper mills and his home. Since it became a museum in 1987, Hearthstone’s focus is to preserve the house and its artifacts to re-create a historical experience based on its Thomas A. Edison heritage for the cultural enjoyment and educational benefit of the public through its many exhibits and programs. Guided tours through Hearthstone are offered as well as a chance to explore the various educational exhibits. All tours are guided by trained docents who discuss the history of the house, its unique place in history, its architecture, and the families who have lived there for over 100 years. The exhibits you'll see are dedicated to Edison, his inventive legacy, electricity, and the history of hydroelectricity at the Hearthstone.

Above and beyond my expectations. Cheryl was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable and kind. The home is stunningly decorated for Christmas. I am here traveling for work from Louisiana and have been to many historical houses in the south. This tour & home was unlike anything I’ve seen there! The attention to detail was immaculate.

Hannah- Thank you for the kind words. Many volunteers have worked hard over the years to make sure everything in the house is completely authentic and of the period the house was built. I am so happy you had a great experience. We have guests from around the world, and enjoy sharing the museum with all of them. Merry Christmas to you and everyone in the beautiful state of Louisiana!

My husband and I stopped by for a tour, and we enjoyed learning about the house, its history, and the families who lived there. So much of the home’s design is original, and the furniture and decor is fitting for the period, if not original. The craftsmanship is breathtaking, and the money of the original family is apparent. In the basement, hands-on elements allow visitors to experience the electricity that was novel to the era. Our guide, Judy, was knowledgeable and fielded all of our questions well, replying with the context of the time and making great comparisons to life today. What a privilege to visit a place as well kept as this! Thank you to the team for preserving and sharing it so well.

Thanks, Reedfreak15. You are correct that everything at Hearthstone is of the period when it was built, and the original craftsmanship is visible throughout. I am glad that you also mentioned one of our volunteers, a house manager, as adding to the experience. Our volunteers are what make Hearthstone what it is, whether giving tours, or helping with projects. If you know anyone that might benefit from the fun and flexibility of volunteerism here, please let us know. Glad you enjoyed your tour!
