This wasn’t our first choice excursion in Juneau but as the whale watching was fully booked, we thought we’d give it a try. Garrett was our guide and he’s very knowledgable for a non-local, with a deadpan delivery. He explained how to do the gold panning and showed us the best technique, but we didn’t get very long to do it ourselves (only about half an hour) which was a real shame and an hour would have been much better. We stood in the actual gold creek to wash the dirt but you don’t need wellies (we wore our hiking boots), and were very proud of our resulting gold flecks! Garrett then drove us to the outdoors salmon bake, further down the same river. The river was full of spawning chum salmon whilst we were there (end of July’23) either about to spawn or recently dead after completing their spawning, it was an amazing sight. There’s also a pretty waterfall and you can try your hands at more gold panning if you want (but no pipettes or vials to store any gold finds). The food was great, beautiful red sockeye salmon that was grilled in front of you, as well as salads, potatoes, and a delicious chowder. The best bit was when a member of the local team asked us if we wanted to see something, then took us back to the river a few metres away to see a Mama black bear eating chum salmon with her 3 cubs! Wow!! It was a top trip and we’re not so sad we missed the whale watching now ;-)

The falls and spawning salmon were the besy. The travel guide was great too. Missed the gold panning because of the cruise ship, but the salmon bake was nice
