Big Morongo Canyon Preserve
Nestled among the Little San Bernardino Mountains in the Sand to Snow National Monument, the desert oasis at Big Morongo Canyon is one of the 10 largest cottonwood and willow riparian habitats in California. The upstream end of the canyon lies in the Mojave Desert, while its downstream portion opens into the Colorado Desert. There are numerous trails to walk and hike, including a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through the marsh and riparian habitats. At 31,000 acres with elevations ranging from 600 feet on the canyon floor to 3000 feet at the top of the ridge, this diverse landscape has been an important part of the Morongo Basin’s natural and cultural history for almost two billion years.

We took the sunset tour of the oasis at the San Andreas Fault followed by a cold drive up to Eureka Peak to see the sunset. It was fantastic and made even better by our fabulous guide, blonde Josh. His knowledge of the area across all topic areas was impressive and we learned a ton about Palm Springs, the Joshua Trees, the San Andreas Fault and many other topics. I would highly recommend the tour but would caution anyone taking it this time of year to dress VERY warmly. Once you get up to elevation it can be very chilly. They provide coats and blankets but plan on dressing in multiple layers.

Our tour guide Josh was very knowledgeable, and led us through the tour with practically no questions unanswered. The Hummer was packed with extra blankets (necessary), waters, granola bars, all included in the original price. When we got to the top and to the end of the tour, Josh was happy to tell us all about the Palm Springs area, other attractions, as well as everything we could possibly know about the Joshua Tree National Park. Highly recommend!!

First and foremost our tour guideJosh was excellent. Very Knowledgeable and made the information he presented very interesting. Know for the details. This tour was combines the San Andreas Fault and Joshua tree Adventure all in a Hummer. Hotel pickups were as expected then we went to the San Andreas Fault area, this was not in the hummer we were still in the pickup van. From here we were driven to a drop off point which was the last restroom stop. Place was a little eclectic coffee shop Restrooms were clean but we had to wait there for 15 minutes while the tour guide went to pickup the hummer. Now the Drive to Joshua tree park. It was about 20 minutes till we started Offroading. Driving up through the desert seeing the Joshua trees was nice but nothing exceptional. What made this part of the trip was off roading in the Hummer. We did this tour in the late afternoon and the second highlight of the tour was the sunset. Overall we had fun but not as exciting as we expected. Just a caution we went in late October and it got really cold as the sun set so make sure you dress accordingly.
