We were in Maui a few weeks ago (mid-August). I had found a great Groupon deal a couple weeks before our trip, and I liked what I saw on their website, so I called Maui Adventure Tours to get more information. Talked to the owner/tour guide, Roger -- very nice guy. Instead of purchasing the Groupon, he suggested that I book our tour directly with him, and he would match the Groupon price (which is a really good deal!). So I booked the Oluwalu Kayak/Snorkel tour for our family of four through him.
And then we arrived in Maui. The night before our tour, Roger sent me a text message to postpone the tour to the following day due to some personal obligations, and I obliged after he assured me that the weather was looking great for that day. The following night, he sent another text message to postpone the tour again, claiming that the wind was too strong/gusty. And ... the next night, yet another text message to postpone the tour again due to strong winds. We drove by the Oluwalu beach early that next morning, and the weather looked calm ... no discernible winds, no whitecaps on waves ... and there seemed to be plenty of people and kayaks ready to set out.
Unfortunately there would be no more postponement for us because that was our last day in Maui! It was very disappointing that we didn't get to do the kayak/snorkel tour, but we did receive a full refund from Roger. He mentioned that he typically cancels about 40% of his tours, so beware of this fact if you choose to book a tour with him ... and especially if you decide to purchase a Groupon for the tour.
If I had known in advance about the 40% cancellation chance, I probably would not have booked a tour with Maui Adventure Tours. Although we received a full refund for our cancelled tour, we missed out on the experience of doing a kayaking/snorkeling adventure during our Maui vacation.
