The museum is at the Churchill Downs Race Track but is a separate entity. Parking was free when I visited, but the parking lot is gated. The basic admission fee includes the museum including a 18 minute "in the round" film and a 30 minute tour of the race track. There is a premium tour that adds another hour and goes to many exclusive places at the facility. The museum is a thorough history of the Kentucky Derby horse race--horses, jockeys, owners, trainers, you name it. The docent for my tour was amazingly knowledgeable. There is dining available and a large gift shop. COVID-19: The employees were all masked. In the theater, employees disinfected the seats (stools that rotate 360 degrees) immediately after one group leaves (they started cleaning before I had left the room). They also take your temperature before you pay the admission fee.

Really enjoyed touring the museum and learning so much about Churchill Downs. The people were extremely nice and helpful. A must visit if you're visiting the area. Visit the Cafe to try their Kentucky Derby Pie.

We have lived in KY for many years but we didn’t know much about horses or horse racing. We took a day trip to L-ville and the museum was a fabulous activity to do! Very safe: Staff taking covid seriously. Also staff was exceptionally warm, friendly, welcoming. Museum had plenty of space for distancing. Everything was super clean. Took the little walking tour outside to see churchill downs. Guide was very knowledgeable and had lots of experience attending races. Exhibits were sursprisingly fun and interesting. Dont miss the welcome movie- it’s great and you’ll wanna yell “awww yeah!” by the end of it. Exhibit of female jockeys was especially memorable because you never hear about them. The noise from the welcome movie can be distracting when you are trying to read some of the exhibits. Also I wish they would add an exhibit about the silks. I highly recommend this museum, we learned a lot and left with a better understanding of horse racing. You don’t need to know anything about horses to enjoy a day here.
