I loved seeing all the memorabilia from the many beautiful champions and touring the stands, but my most moving was sitting in the round table horse rink and seeing and hearing the history of great races like the Triple Crown winners. Don't miss it! All ages can enjoy it.

We spent a lot of time here and enjoyed every minute of it. This was last minute on our trip to Louisville, but definitely a must do.

My 20s son and I booked the 10:30 am Historic Walking tour on a very chilly Thursday in February. The walking tour took about a half hour followed by entrance to the Kentucky Derby Museum and a 11:10 showing of "The Greatest Race". Our tour guide met approximately 15 of us and led us outside. Walking along to Churchill Downs, he pointed out the plaques along the roofline with the winners names for each year; some winning triple crown. He also described the history and how horses are selected to run each year. I didn't realize that thoroughbreds are three years old and only eligible the one year. We next saw a section of the courtyard where the race horses and jockeys walk into prior to the race, settle in an outside stall and prep for the race. After this we walked into the racetrack itself. The racetrack surface is protected so no one is allowed to step on it. However, we stood beside it and inside the winners circle all the while listening to our guide explaining several traditions for the Kentucky Derby including the handling of tickets and the sizable crowd. He led us back inside where we had about ten minutes before our movie was scheduled to begin. The movie "The Greatest Race" is quite cool and a definite must see. You sit on stools that spin and the screen above you is 360 degrees. You spin around to watch the appropriate scenes as the story unfolds. It was updated through 2019. After the movie, we toured the museum. It is quite interactive in that it offers a mechanical horse to sit on that simulates you racing the horse in a derby race. There are jockey outfits to try on. There is a place to simulate placing bets. Besides the interactive elements, there are many displays to read and appreciate. Some examples are that they have a statue of the current winning jockey and horse with the blanket of roses. There is a replica of the starting gate. There are plaques of every year's winner so you can find one from years that are meaningful to you. Outside the museum is a paddock with one retired race horse for viewing. There are restrooms and a museum with a fun selection of fancy derby hats for purchase or photographing! A very enjoyable and worthwhile visit while in Louisville!
