Eric was an excellent guide for the waterfall rappelling tour, providing extensive expertise based on his long experience with that activity (and his certifications). It made a fun and beautiful experience very safe and enjoyable. And he was really nice, to boot!

This hidden gem is just lovely. The staff is incredibly helpful, the grounds are stunning, and we are so glad we made the drive to Hilo. The hike itself isn’t too long- 30-45 minutes at most. Some of it is slippery but if you take your time, you feel pretty accomplished when you’ve made it without slipping. The falls are beautiful. You can swim in the water if the staff deems it safe enough, take a kayak or paddle board. We didn’t because it was too difficult for me, but plenty of others did just fine. We brought our lunch and the staff welcomes you to eat it on the upper lanai with a view of the waterfall. There is a residence restroom available, water refilling station, water shoes and walking sticks to borrow. It really is a great way to spend some time. We did not stay the entire 5 hours- I don’t really know what you’d do for that amount of time, but it’s a great experience and we highly recommend it.

I would not return. Would not recommend. If the goal was merely to see a waterfall, I could have hiked to view a public one. I bought this ticket for the opportunity to kayak near the waterfall. We counted 22 ppl at falls, one adult kayak, one paddle board and 2 children’s kayaks, one broken. One family of 5 used the only adult Kayak for 2.5 hours, literally standing guard over it to hand it off to family members. It took 45” maybe to hike down. So after 3 hours and no hope of kayaking, we left. I wld imagine having more kayaks available wld solve the issue. I put two stars because we were able to hike down the path and see some lower falls.

Aloha Kim, we are sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. Just to clarify some things, all of the kayaks are suitable for adults and children. Some just have room for two. None of our kayaks are broken, but paddles to sometimes break, and are replaced. Your experience is the first we have heard of equipment not being shared with courtesy among our guests. We do not charge extra for the equipment, and do rely on our guests communicating with each other if they would like a turn. It sounds like there were two other kayaks you could have used, as well as a paddleboard. If you were hoping to use the larger two person kayak, we suspect if you would have introduced yourself to the other guests, they would have happily obliged. Kulaniapia Falls is the only waterfall on the big island that you can get close to like this, and swim in when river safety conditions permit. It's larger than rainbow falls, and as you mentioned, only had 20 people on the trails. We pride ourselves on sharing a very special space with a limited number of guests each day. We are glad you enjoyed the trails and views of the other 3 waterfalls on property. Mahalo!
