Excursions en jeep dans le canyon de La Plata au départ de Durango

Aperçu
Our Durango Jeep tour travels up La Plata Canyon, a rugged ravine nestled in an alpine paradise.

Here in this glacially sculpted landscape, you’ll find waterfalls cascading into the canyon, hallways of glimmering aspens, countless wildflowers, wildlife scurrying between the meadows, and panoramic views of Colorado's most beautiful Rocky Mountains. Like we said, paradise!

Our fun-loving and experienced guides are Durango locals, who know this canyon's rich history and ecology like nobody else. While other outfitters tend to let the scenery do all the work for them, our guides give you a wealth of insight about what makes this area incredibly special. They're also talented drivers who will get you up this rutted trail without a hitch.

Most people don't want to take their own vehicles up this old mining route, and our open-air Jeeps are customized for a smoother ride— although it will still be bumpy about half way through. It's all a part of the fun!

Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours
Discover the spectacular La Plata Canyon (20 minutes West of Durango) and its beautiful U formation created by glaciers on one of our Colorado jeep tours. Several small waterfalls and cascading rivers follow the rugged jeep trails in the springtime along with lots of wildlife such as marmots, mule deer, elk herds, juncos, kingfishers, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. On our guided jeep tours you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).

On the way up, keep your eyes peeled for deer, marmot, fox, birds of prey— and if you’re lucky, a moose or bear! Once we've reached the top of the canyon, we'll take some time to enjoy a spectacular view of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado's most beloved Rockies! From late June to early August, this is the perfect off-roading trail for wildflowers. In late September to early October, the large aspen groves make for amazing fall colors

This was one of the best tours we have taken as a family, and most of it was because of Tosh. The scenery was great, the beauty of the Rockies is mind boggling, and the views were breathtaking. That would be true and the same with any tour. But Tosh brought it all alive with his unbelievable knowledge, stories, and humor. He was attentive to our questions, to our needs, and to our enjoyment of the trip - making sure we had a fabulous experience. The tour guide makes the tours work, and Tosh not only makes your tours work, he makes your company work and rise to the high level it has achieved. What an awesome ambassador you have in Tosh.

My wife and I took the Jeep tour into La Plata Canyon on October 19th. There was only our Jeep and there was one other couple in it. It was a total blast. We were lucky in that there was virtually no other traffic on the tour. The scenery was great. We saw waterfalls, forests, mountains, fields. We also saw a group of deer right in the middle of the road. Our driver/guide, Jay, was great. I don't know if you can request guides but if you can I highly recommend him. He asked what we wanted to see/do. Both the other couple and us had actual cameras so he said "looks like you want pictures". He took us all over and would stop any time we wanted to take pictures and would maneuver the Jeep as needed for us to get the exact shots we wanted. We are from Arizona and this was our first visit to Durango. We plan to return and definitely want to do another Jeep tour with Mild to Wild and Jay if we can. We hope to come in rafting season as well and do one of those trips too. As for the Jeep ride, it goes from pavement, to off road to REALLY off road so be prepared to hang on but that is part of the fun. The Jeep is going to kick up dust so wear something you don't mind getting a bit dirty. Also everything is going to get dust on it, so make sure you can cover things you need to keep clean. If you bring a camera like I did, keep the camera bag closed when not in use if you bring one and make sure you have a lens cover between shots to keep the glass clean if you have one as well. I also know it depends on the time of year you go, but we had on tee shirts most of the trip but going thru some canyons on the way back that sit in the shade you could feel the temps drop like 10 degrees in seconds so bring a light jacket as well. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for your elaborate review of what to expect on our Durango Jeep Tour. We are so glad you had a Blast on your tour and enjoyed Jay as your guide and you CAN request him for your next tour. :) Another great tour in the area is our Silverton Jeep Tour which is one hour north of Durango. We can't wait to share rafting wit you too! Thank you again for choosing Mild to Wild!

Trip was great. Safe equipment, Ben was great driver and we enjoyed. If we could have left one lady at the base I would have scored it a 10. They can’t help who their customers are.
