Adventures on the Gorge
Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V.  Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

We did the half day lower New River rafting trip. From beginning to end, everyone was professional and helpful. We had a great experience with our guide "Try" and would eagerly raft with him again. The rapids were fun...and not scary if you have ever rafted before. We were there in July during slight rain showers. Would recommend as great family fun.

Do not go on this trip with a young child. There is a rapid III they call “surprise” where you’re guaranteed to fall out of the boat. My 6 year old grandson and I fell out and almost drowned in the “hole” swirling around and gasping for air. It was terrifying. When we finally got spit out it was pure carnage. All inflatable kayaks were flipped upside down people floating on the water. It reminded me of the titanic carnage and all the kids were crying. The parents were in shock. They haven’t changed their safety at all as someone posted the same thing back in 2022. The guides were nonchalant about it and when I said it was terrifying they said “but it was a fun terrifying wasn’t it”. It was pitiful that they didn’t care.

We are so sorry to hear that our Upper New trip did not meet your expectations. We run the Upper New with families because of its relative lack of any appreciable hazards. Participants are not guaranteed to fall out at the Suprise rapid, however, when whitewater rafting, there is a chance you may swim! For those who are not comfortable swimming with a personal flotation device, we would not recommend whitewater rafting. Instead, we would recommend an aerial or land adventure such as ziplining or hiking.

Amazing! The whole experience was phenomenal. Awesome guides. Nice riverside lunch. Even the bus ride was pleasant. When can I return?!?
