The half-day trip to Magnolia Plantation was definitely the choice to make. This included a walking tour of the gardens, a tram ride around the edge of the property (sit on the left side for the best views of the alligators and birds), and a great tour of the home. Quality staff everywhere.

The Magnolia Plantation Tour was well worth doing. The tour lasted approximately 4.5 hours. On the way to the Magnolia plantation, the tour guide Bill gave us a brief history of Charleston starting with it’s colonial past and ending with the present time. The Magnolia Plantation is gorgeous with ancient oaks draped with Spanish moss, azeleas, scenic swamps with beautiful numerous crossing bridges, 14 foot alligators, blue herons, and much, much more. The tour consists of 3 separate plantation activities- a one hour walking tour of the grounds surrounding the main plantation home, a one hour motorized tour of the remaining 500 acres, and finally a tour of the Drayton plantation home. The tour is chock filled with the history of the property (both ante-bellum and post bellum) and a balanced assessment of that history. It was a very good use of my time in Charleston SC.
