Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

The history and beauty of Magnolia Plantation has stood the test of time. It is also the only Plantation on the Ashley River that survived both the American Revolution and the Civil War. It is one of the oldest plantations in the south and is also known as America's most beautiful Garden. This guided Magnolia Plantation Tour comes with round trip transportation in our climate controlled buses. All gate fees are included in the price of this 4.5 hour tour and will allow you to step back in time, so you can experience Magnolias incredible history. On this tour, you will experience a 45-minute narrated tram ride past slave cabins, through swamps, rice fields and see wildlife such as alligators, egrets, herons, and turtles on the nearly 600 acre plantation and garden visit. You will also receive a guided walk through America's last large scale Romantic Garden, which is also known as America's most beautiful Garden.

Took a combo tour ... Shawn our guide was excellent ! We had a great day ... was sorry to see it end. Learned a lot about this great city. Shawn was pleasant and entertaining. Certainly would recommend these tours. I’ll be back for more !

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, located on the Ashley River near Charleston, South Carolina, is the oldest public gardens in USA. It was originally founded in 1676 by Thomas Drayton and his wife Ann of the Drayton family when arriving from Barbados to the new English colony of Charles Towne and building a house and small formal garden on the site. It was originally a rice plantation with extensive earthworks of dams and dikes built in fields along the river for irrigating land for rice cultivation. The plantation remains under the control of the Drayton family after 15 generations for more than 300 years. Since 1870 when the gardens opened to the public for the 1st time in 1870 and saved the plantation from ruins due to the consequences of the American Civil War, the plantation and gardens have evolved and grown into one of the greatest public gardens in USA.

This is a great option if you want to visit the plantation but don’t want to get stuck out there all day. I liked that this company had your visit planned out for you and got you back in time to enjoy the rest of your day. Alan, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and open to questions! It is kind of a long time without eating. We did the 10:30 departure and you don’t get back until about 2:30. There is a cafe at the plantation with good food, but you have to choose between getting to explore on your own or buying food to sit and eat. I also wish they had given us the choice upfront to go on the wildlife tour vs. the slave cabin tour. They were at the same time and it would have been nice to know ahead of time that we could choose. Other than that, I thought it was a great option for touring the plantation as long as you bring snacks or are prepared to buy food when they finish up with the tours.
