Since I had never been to Hawaii, I really had no idea what to expect. I traveled from Los Angeles to the Big Island with my partner and we had really planned just a week of relaxation and "doing nothing". While we were on a hike at Pololu Valley, we ran into a nice family from San Antonio who suggested we call Captain Ron at Coral Reef Adventures for the adventure of a lifetime. They had been snorkeling with manta rays the night before and suggested that it was the highlight of their trip. They were so passionate about this snorkeling adventure that we had to call and check it out. We scheduled a night snorkel with manta rays for the following night and were not disappointed. I had never been snorkeling before and the prospect of being in the water after dark made me a little uneasy. Cpt Andy and Natalie were perfect hosts and teachers. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel so welcome and put my mind at ease. This was a small charter that included the two of us and a nice family of four; much more intimate that several of the other tour groups. On the way to the dive site, our boat was escorted by a group of spinner dolphins. We watched from the bow of the ship as the dolphins swam next to us spinning and jumping, almost like our own private escorts. Cpt Andy sped up and made a huge circle to create a big wake, and we watched the dolphins jump and surf the wake of the boat. It was pretty amazing! Once we arrived at the site, Cpt Andy gave us a quick manta ray lesson, and Natalie gave us our instructions for the snorkel. Once we were in the water, we were joined by several other tour groups totaling approximately 150 people in the water. Quick description: you on the surface stretched out like Superman holding on to a raft with lights to attract plankton; about 20 divers at the bottom (100 ft) shining lights up to attract plankton; after a few minutes the manta rays swim into view underneath you; once the plankton have accumulated the manta rays come closer and closer; once they begin their feeding rolls. they are almost on top of you. These rays measure from 5 feet to 16 feet across. It was a little strange and scary...but magical. I felt the rays brush against my stomach several times while they were feeding. We were in the water for about 30 minutes and Natalie made sure that we had the best show. She kept us alert to the approach of the rays, and maneuvered us into the best position to see the manta rays. If you are in Hawaii, do not miss this adventure...and if you choose to participate, call Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures. Big thanks to Andy and Natalie for the adventure of a lifetime....and thanks for the "Humpy's" recommendation; great fish and chips!

Did two tours with Coral Reef, the night Manta Ray Snorkel came first. There were only four guests on the excursion which made for a very intimate personal experience. The boat is small but comfortable. We did experience some pretty hellish waves and most of us were feeling queasy. Spent a bit too long anchored (and not moving) near the Sheraton waiting for sunset and for our adventure to begin. The mantas did not disappoint as we encountered five on our snorkel including Big Bertha! We had plenty of time to interact with them before they moved on to the divers below which allowed us to view them from above, a nice additional perspective. Capt. Carl and staff were wonderful. Carl has the most easy way about him that makes everyone feel confident and assured no matter what their skill and activity level is. He responded very quickly to a problem I was having with my mask, and got me back in the water in no time! The following morning we did the dolphin swim and adventure. We found dolphins almost immediately and ended up swimming with a pod of at least 150. My partner perfected his timing and managed to went his way into a circle of about 150 dolphins all coming to the surface all about him. Fantastic! Decent lunch and snacks served and plenty of cold drinks. Again thanks to Capt. Carl for his expertise and wonderful calm helpful demeanor. His experience shows! Highly recommend both tours.

We opted to try both of these tours with Coal Reef Snorkel due to how awesome they sounded and the high reviews on Tripadvisor. I echo those ratings as we had a great experience with Ron Gittins and mate Natalie on both trips. My wife was scared of doing the Manta Ray trip - the idea of being in the ocean at night was disconcerting. But once we got there, she slid into the water and was not afraid at any point. The difference is that the ocean is being lit up with all the lights from the snorkelers and divers. With the glow sticks placed on our snorkel's for safety/identification, I likened the whole thing to an ocean rave. We had 10-12 Manta's on our trip. The free loans of wetsuits Ron provided was a great help as it kept us from being even a little cold and Natalie was in the water with us as we all held onto a floating ring rigged with lights pointed down. If you haven't already read about this, the lights attract the plankton which in turn attract the Manta's - likely the only place on earth where this experience can be had. Do this tour if you are on the island and at all comfortable in the water. It is a life experience. The dolphin snorkel was also enjoyable, but I would rank it second to the Manta's despite the higher price. We had an excellent trip, but I would expect it to be a little more hit-or-miss. The dolphins are wild and unpredictable, but we were able to find an agreeable pod of about 30 that hung around with us for a while. They didn't 'play' with us or any such thing, but also didn't mind us being there and we had a pretty close-up view. Ron tried hard to find the dolphins and also spent time looking for other sea life of interest. The smaller group made it easier to get in and out of the water quickly to get with these wonderful animals. Ron's boat only holds six passengers, but this is a good thing as he tries hard to give you a personal experience. He called me by name the whole time, and made sandwiches to order as well as his wife's near-legendary Macadamia brownies. I've uploaded a video highlight of each tour if you want to search for it.

Aloha It's good to hear from our guests about their personal experience on the ocean here in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. I appreciate all the detail of the charter from your point of view. It helps us to see from you eyes what is being experience by our new friends. Since we do it everyday, it's a common occurrence for us.But we don't want that to hinder your excitement of the activity. Actually, all of the crew at Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures love their jobs and love to share with our visitors the wonderful marine life here in the ocean. It really brings us a great feeling when we can deliver something that you may never see anywhere else. Thanks so much for letting us know about the great time you had with us. Captain Ron
