I wanted to do one of the manta snorkel tours while visiting the Big Island and a friend picked this one. The reviews looked great, but I thought it seemed rather expensive. We decided to go for it and hope for the best.
When we arrived at the site where the mantas come to feed on the plankton, there wasn't much going on. The boats head out rather early to make sure they can get one of the few places to tie off, and then you wait around for it to get dark. The crew provided us with lots of info about the manta rays while we waited to get into the water.
Finally the time to get in the water arrived and we got in one by one to hold onto the board with lights shining down. A couple barely visible manta rays were briefly visible as they swam along the bottom. I was beginning to get a little disappointed in the experience when suddenly the mantas began to swim up toward the boards to feed on the plankton that the lights attracted. We watched in awe as several mantas swam up, sometimes alone, and sometimes in pairs. Watching them do their barrel rolls was amazing! I'm not sure how long we watched them feeding, maybe 20-30 minutes, but soon it was time to get back on the boat and head back to the harbor.
This tour was one of the most awe inspiring things I've ever done. Afterwards I was so happy that I splurged for the night snorkel and I hope to be able to do it again one day. I highly recommend this trip with Manta Adventures!
