I wasn’t quite sure we should spend our time in this museum, because I was afraid it might just be a trashy tourist trap. However, it was a pleasant surprise. It is run by a non-profit foundation, so is not oriented toward ripping off the tourists. It is mostly about Mel Fisher’s quest for the Atocha’s treasures, but it also very informative on the history of the Spanish treasure fleets, and life on board sailing vessels at the time of the Atocha’s sinking (1622). There are many of the artifacts displayed that were recovered from the Atocha and other ships, including priceless jewelry, coins, bullion, ceramics, pottery, and metal objects. Each of the displays of artifacts includes historic information on the artifact and the backstory of each. The museum also includes information on underwater archeology and recovery techniques. Don’t miss this place during your visit to Key West.

A very interesting and informative museum. I can vaguely recall the discovery, but the events surrounding it are new to me. A pity that part of the museum was closed during our visit.

After buying my ticket, the first thing I see before I even enter the official museum is a very prominent display for the "1619 Project". A favorite of the "Black Lives Matter" hucksters, this political project, which has been proven to be full of lies and distortions, has nothing to do with treasures found off the coast of Key West. I'm not sure who talked the owner/operators into this display, but it should not be there. The museum itself, as others have pointed out - is very short on actual artifacts. There is 1 awesome emerald cross necklace and one awesome ornate bowl. That is the highlight viewing for your $17.50. In addition to the artifacts from the sea, there are sections (upstairs) about pirates and the Cuban Missle Crisis. I could see boys liking the pirate info, and the key west/cuban missle crisis connection makes the display worthwhile, but there's nothing there you likely couldn't find online. We were in and out in under and hour - and definitely felt underwhelmed.
