The gold exhibit, whiich was the best part of the museum, is no longer on display Some silver is still on display The museum is now mostly a slave ship museum The administrator said someone stole one of the gold bars, so the gold exhib, which was the great reason to go the museum, had been removed All jewelry items for sale are now imitations, not the real gold/silver couns The museum is a pale imitation of what it once was It should not be recommended at all

Yes, one of our most iconic artifacts on exhibit was stolen about 10 years ago. Nobody is more heartbroken by the theft then the museum and its staff. Despite the FBI arresting the theives and them being convicted in federal court, it has not resulted in the recovery of the bar for it to be returned to display. Nonetheless, the museum has more than 11,000 artifacts on display. Since your previous visit the museum has increased in size and scope by 400%. We have added more than 10,000 square feet of never before gallery space. The museum NEVER sold authentic artifacts or coins, as it is counter to our mission of preservation of the collection for future generations. If you sell it, even one piece at a time, it soon will be all gone. We do not do that --ever. Less than 4% of all museums are fully accredited, we are proudly fully accredited and as such recognized as a leader in the museum field. Perhaps the experience you were looking for is best found in one of the local jewelry stores. Our goal is to provide the many shipwreck tales in an authentic, engaging and intellectual manner. Yes, one of those stories is the merchant slave ship Henrietta Marie. When Mel Fisher discovered her final resting place in the 1970s, the transatlantic slave trade was virtually absent from history books. Through 30+ years of exploration, recovery and research the museum now has the single largest collection of transatlantic slave trade artifacts. We are proud to have delved into an under studied chapter of world history for the benefit of history lovers everywhere. Before being installed here in Key West as a permanent exhibition our museum toured the exhibition "A Slave Ship Speaks", visited internationally by more than 1 million museum-goers, a greatly expanded exhibition incorporating the stories of 5 additional ships has been developed with the support of many generous funders. If you wish to broaden your horizons, expand your knowledge of world history and be wowed by objects recovered after 400+ years on the ocean floor, stop on by. We're telling these stories everyday. What we have become as an instution is exactly what Mel & Deo Fisher hoped for as their legacy.

I remember when it was announced the Atocha (Spanish ship from the 1600's) was discovered and the initial stories were released. It was an amazing story about the biggest sunken treasure ever recovered. As a kid I was fascinated about treasure hunters, especially sunken treasure. The museum did not present this amazing story as amazingly as I could imagine it could have been told. That being said, it is a good museum with good displays. It is informative and educational. The excitement and the importance of this find were underemphasized.
