À quoi s'attendre

Misty Fjords National Monument
Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

Michelle Masden owner/operator of Island Wings Air Service is the most amazing float plane pilot. Michelle is so charismatic and passed on her love of flying and Alaska to her passengers. The whole experience from booking to returning to our cruise ship was handled with friendliness and professionalism. Island wings goes the extra mile to make sure your experience is out of this world and provides a knowledgeable and quality service. Take offs and landings soo smooth, scenery amazing, Nooya Lake awe inspiring. Sorry we couldn't see the bear Michelle! We have no hesitation in recommending this small personal team for your floatplane experience. Magic!

Dear LoveTravel, Thank you for the glowing review! My love of flying through Southeast Alaska is reaffirmed every day through the eyes and experiences of passengers like yourself! It would be hard not to love a job that includes sharing the grandeur that Alaska has to offer. Wildlife can be challenging to see from the air, mostly because one's perspective is off, being so far away. Bears look like dark fuzzy moving spots from an airplane. During July, August and September, when the salmon are running, we offer bear viewing tours, where you see them on the ground and quite close. Very different tour from Misty Fjords, but equally fun if you like wildlife. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip and thank you again for flying with us! All the best, Michelle

We took an Inside Passage cruise as a high school graduation gift for our son and the flight into Misty Fjords was the highlight for him. We had no trouble booking and were met by staff on the dock just where they said they would be. We flew with Adam, who made us feel incredibly comfortable and safe and was full of fun chatter and information about everything we were doing and seeing. I've never been in a small plane and it was incredibly thrilling taking off and landing on the water, and the scenery as we glided over the glacier-carved peaks, glistening fjords and jewel-like alpine lakes was beyond any I've ever seen. Goat Lake, where we landed and got out to explore a bit, was surreal in its perfection. Adam took an amazing picture of us with the plane and gave us lots of time to take in our larger-than-life surroundings. On the ride back - via a different route than we flew out - we were fortunate enough to spot a herd of mountain goats and Adam circled so we were all able to view them. I truly believe Island Wings offers a better value than the other flight services - we saw some services who were on their second flight while we were still in the air. These folks are truly invested in your safety and experience, it was worth every penny!

Dear melsbells88, Happy to hear you had such a wonderful time flying with me! I take steps to make sure my passengers are as comfortable as possible—that way they can focus more on enjoying the music, the scenery, and my commentary! Along with that, I go out of my way to make each and every flight unique in its own little way. I figure that if I show passengers something I think looks cool—especially after having visited the Misty Fjords as many times as I have, I can only imagine what they’re thinking on their *very first* visit. Anyway, thanks again for flying with Island Wings! Sincerely, Adam Weiland

We received clear directions where to meet for the trip and were greeted by two friendly staff members. Everyone we encountered was professional and eager to ensure we enjoyed the experience. Michelle was our pilot, she gave clear instructions to help us get in and out of the plane, pointed out sights during our flight, offered to take photos at the midway stop (which was breathtakingly gorgeous!), and shared information about the environment. She was very competent and obviously loves Alaska. I was nervous about this adventure, but felt very safe. There are no words to describe how it felt to view this vast wilderness from the plane. Take offs and landings were smooth.

Dear Sharon, Thank you very much for the superb review! It helps so much for small business to receive honest reviews so others will have confidence in flying with us. I'm so happy to know that you felt safe flying with me and that I was a part in showing you this amazing place. I am a lucky gal to have this for a job! Thank you for flying with me and wishing you safe and happy travels! All the best, Michelle
